Zibri, the creator of ZiPhone, is leaving the business of jailbreaking and delving into personal issues. Even though he hasn’t contributed to the 2.0 jailbreaking scene, he was still a major part of the 1.1.X jailbreaking effort. He made my extremely time-consuming (1 hour) instructions for jailbreaking 1.1.3 (here), into a process that took about 2 minutes. Here are the words from the man himself.
It was an incredible ride, guys, and I’m sincerely grateful
to everybody who made this happen.
As some of you may know, from the 7th of November 2008 I’m a father.
All my efforts are now focused on my family then, later, I’ll start some other project
maybe related with the iPhone, maybe not.
So, from now the ziphone.org domain (Pagerank 6 on Google) is FOR SALE.
I don’t really get what the whole domain sale is for, though. It won’t be the same for whoever actually buys it. Zibir, we won’t forget all the hard work you put into the jailbreaking community. Thank you.
I have said it before and I will say it again: DO NOT UPGRADE! Now, I know that the new firmware (2.2) is not yet out. I just wanted to warn you that upgrading your iPod may and will cause it to be unjailbreakable. For your sake (and so I do not get a lot of useless emails), wait until I write to let you know that it is safe to upgrade. Upgrading WILL DELETE all of your jailbroken apps and refresh it to Apple standards. We all have to let the Dev Team create a method for jailbreaking. This will most likely be in the form of an upgraded version of QuickPwn, or cmw might update WinPwn. I dougt that Zibri will update ZiPhone anytime soon.
So, just to reiterate. DO NOT UPGRADE YET.
This weekend has been full of updates on jailbreaking, from every source that provides the experience.
ZiPhone:
Zibri has not shown any real signs of a 3G unlock or a 2ng Gen jailbreak. He did post that he is “actually focused on many projects but I’m still keeping an eye on the iPhone world.”. There isn’t much iPod news thre. He did state that he has created another website dealing with “‘hacky’ news not only iPhone related.”. The link to this site (Zibri’s World) is here.
WinPwn:
OK, this isn’t really an update. It is just a sign of existence. Cmw (WinPwn’s creator) just wrote a post stating “time for an update!”. This might be because of the important update made by the Dev Team.
Dev Team:
The dev team has made some pretty substantial updates. The dev team has gotten into the 3G’s baseband. This means that they are going to be able to hack the baseband and make the 3G unlockable. Yeah, that is big. There is a video of it on their site here.
So yeah. Thats a lotta updates for this weekend, hopefully with new updates coming fast in the future.
Of course it happens. Right when I show how to jailbreak and hack a firmware, they come out with another firmware AND method.
For those of you familiar with ZiPhone and how easy it is to use, this method of jailbreaking is for you. It is called QuickPwn, and is pretty easy. It is still in beta testing stages, so I do not recommend using it yet and I will not post a link until I am sure it has the bugs worked out. Stay tuned for a video and a “Detailed Instructions” in the near future.
Also, firmware 2.0.2 has been released. Upgrading to this firmware will DELETE EVERYTHING that you have added if you have a jailbroken iPod/iPhone. I suggest not upgrading until a newer version of WinPwn or QuickPwn (when it is ready for public use) is released.
Looks like Zibri, the creator of ZiPhone, is finally announcing that he will be releasing an updated version of his program. This is what he wrote on his site’s blog:
Next generation of ZiPhone is in the works.
It will be as simple as Apple would have done it.
A simple one click program.
A 5 seconds run.
Stay tuned.
Personally, ZiPhone is my favorite way to jailbreak. It is a true hack, and I thank him greatly for making his personal works public for others (especially me) to use with ease. All you have to do is click one button and it does all the work. Because of this, I waited so long to post a jailbreak for 2.0(.1). It figures that the day I actually post how to jailbreak with WinPwn, he makes his announcement.
For those of you who want to wait for ZiPhone to be updated, go right ahead. For those of you who are anxious to jailbreak 2.0(.1), read my post below and good luck.

Update: If you have an iPod Touch with the latest 2.0 software you will need to downgrade your software from 2.0 to 1.14 before using this tutorial.
In my previous ZiPhone post, I was not as explicit with directions as my other jailbreak method. I am sorry. To make it up to you, here are DETAILED instructions for Jailbreaking your iPod Touch. For those of you curious, it takes up as much space as ONE song. So not a lot at all.
WARNING: If anything goes wrong, hold the home button and the power button until it turns off. Keep holding it until it shows the connect to iTunes image. Then try again. It should work the second time if the first doesn’t.
1. Restore your iPod to firmware 1.1.4
- Plug in your iPod and run iTunes.
- When your iPod shows up in iTunes, click the restore button
- This will erase everything on your iPod, but you can sync it later
- Do not restore from a backup
2. Download ZiPhone
- Download ZiPhone
- Click on the downloaded file and let it install
- If it doesn’t install, you need to download and install this .net microsoft file
3. Run ZiPhone
- With your plugged in iPod and ZiPhone running, click Jailbreak (the second action)
- Wait a minute, and your iPod will be jailbroken with installer on your home screen.
4. Get it Running
- In installer, go to the Install tab, click all packages, and install BSD Subsystem
- To get the January apps, go to the sources tab and click edit, and add http://ipodtouchmaster.com/files/repo.xml OR http://repo.applerepo.com
- In the Install tab, go to iPhone 1.1.4 Applications and install iPhone 1.1.4 Apps
- Add the source
- In Installer, go to Install, All Packages, then install BossTool
- Once installed, click home and let the iPod refresh
- Click BossTools, Free Disk Space, then Relocate Fonts
- You can then uninstall BossTool in Installer in the Uninstall tab
5. You are done
- Sync with iTunes and enjoy your Touching
- Keep reading ipodtouchhacks.com to see what the next steps are and what you can actually do now with your hacked device.
