For those of you who remember using WinPwn to jailbreak your iPod/iPhones, you remember how easy and beneficial it wasw to use. For those of you who don’t, it was good. You could personalize your device, from boot logos to packages already installed in Cydia every time you restore your device. What you would do is create your own personalized firmware, based off of an existing firmware, and installl it through a ‘pwnd’ iTunes.
Unfortunately, WinPwn hasn’t been updated in a long time. People today rely on QuickPwn to jailbreak their devices. There is no way to customize your device to the core. It is now a time for change, thanks to Jailbird.
Jailbird (http://getjailbird.com/) is the new alternative to WinPwn. While it is still in the beta stages and not yet released, it shows much promise. THe program itself will be able to jailbreak any iPod Touch 1G, iPhone 2G, or iPhone 3G. Also, when asked about jailbreaking the iPod Touch 2G, they said, “If the ability is there to do it, it will be built into Jailbird.” We will just have to wiat for the release of “redsnow” to see.
On a side note, I am working on a new project. It is not specifically associated with iPodTouchHacks, but will involve such topics found here. It is almost finished, and I will be releasing it soon, but I thought I would just tease you all with that knowledge.
I have said it before and I will say it again: DO NOT UPGRADE! Now, I know that the new firmware (2.2) is not yet out. I just wanted to warn you that upgrading your iPod may and will cause it to be unjailbreakable. For your sake (and so I do not get a lot of useless emails), wait until I write to let you know that it is safe to upgrade. Upgrading WILL DELETE all of your jailbroken apps and refresh it to Apple standards. We all have to let the Dev Team create a method for jailbreaking. This will most likely be in the form of an upgraded version of QuickPwn, or cmw might update WinPwn. I dougt that Zibri will update ZiPhone anytime soon.
So, just to reiterate. DO NOT UPGRADE YET.
Jailbreaking updates are starting to become rare these days. In reality, it seems as though there aren’t that many new apps coming out. Whenever I update Cydia, I mostly see new wallpapers, ringtones, and themes. I see the occasional system app from BigBoss, but nothing really cool has come out yet. Anyways, onto the not update.
WinPwn is just talking about updates, not actually doing them. Here is there words, straight from the site:
It’s been very busy for me recently at work and I haven’t had much time to spend on WinPwn.But i’m hoping that planet/squpid and I can get the latest version out soon. I will keep you updated
So, this pretty much means nothing except that the programmers are alive. Now, I’m not knocking them, I appreciate their work. I just am itching for some sort of update from SOMEONE.
ZiPhone has had no updates other than he is now a proud father. Congradulations Zibri.
The iPhone Dev Team hasn’t come up with any new updates since Timber beta 2, so no, there isn’t yet a jailbreak for the iPod Touch 2nd gen.
I know, not a lot of good news (or any real news at all). I guess we just have to play the waiting game…
This weekend has been full of updates on jailbreaking, from every source that provides the experience.
ZiPhone:
Zibri has not shown any real signs of a 3G unlock or a 2ng Gen jailbreak. He did post that he is “actually focused on many projects but I’m still keeping an eye on the iPhone world.”. There isn’t much iPod news thre. He did state that he has created another website dealing with “‘hacky’ news not only iPhone related.”. The link to this site (Zibri’s World) is here.
WinPwn:
OK, this isn’t really an update. It is just a sign of existence. Cmw (WinPwn’s creator) just wrote a post stating “time for an update!”. This might be because of the important update made by the Dev Team.
Dev Team:
The dev team has made some pretty substantial updates. The dev team has gotten into the 3G’s baseband. This means that they are going to be able to hack the baseband and make the 3G unlockable. Yeah, that is big. There is a video of it on their site here.
So yeah. Thats a lotta updates for this weekend, hopefully with new updates coming fast in the future.
Well, I think that it finally happened. The guys who brought you WinPwn (mainly cmw) have made jailbreaking way too easy. I looked at WinPwn 2.5 and what a difference it was from the previous versions. It is so easy, a caveman could do it (sorry Geico). But seriously, when the term Guided User Interface is spoken, this is what people mean. I don’t think that I even need to post instructions on how to use it. I will, however, answer problems people have been having with it (if there are any) directly on this post. I know, I am breaking my own rules by actually answering posts, but I am pretty confident that I won’t be getting many questions.
By the way, I am pretty close to picking a new writer for this site. Since jailbreaking is pretty solid now, we will be focusing on more applications and general Apple news. I think by the end of the week, we will have some new posts that I am sure you readers will enjoy.
What is it with all these updates? We get QuickPwn, we get ZiPhone promises, and now we get the new WinPwn. I insist looking at the site to view the screenshots. Here is what cmw (the creator) quickly wrote:
So this is the big week. You will see a release this later this week of the latest and greatest WinPwn 2.5. I don’t want to give away all of it’s secret’s but here is some things to look forward too:
The “things” are of course the screenshots available at WinPwn’s Site. THis is all very cool and all, but is this all very necessary with the release of QuickPwn? My guess is that this new update is mainly a better GUI and more for the iPhone (for unlocking purposes). Either way, it is coming out soon and it looks pretty cool.
So the new WinPwn is out. I am going to test it a few times before I release a “Detailed Instructions” and YouTube video. Expect a release within a day or two. Be patient and be prepared to have a jailbroken 2.0 with the AppStore.
According to the official WinPwn site (http://winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page), there will be a new release of the WinPwn FREE software that will jailbreak 2.0. The site says “soon”, so there is no really set date. Hopefully, within a few days this program will be completed and ready to operate. When that time comes, I will of course be there to write a “Detailed Instructions” and make a YouTube video. This jailbreak will supposedly let Installer coexist with the AppStore, which could prove to be interesting. Also, to those who will wait on 1.1.4 until the jailbreak gets bugs out of it, I will make a 1.1.4 youtube Jailbreak video using ZiPhone.
Hello. If you are reading this, you have upgraded to firmware 2.0 and miss the old 1.1.4. No problem (even though I warned you). Here is what you gotta do. It is a little tricky, with 2 whole (complicated) steps, but it is worth it to be back into the hacking world. Here is the first video tutorial for the site on how to do it:
Detailed Instructions on how to Downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4
1. Downgrade iTunes
- Since you need iTunes 7.7 in order to have 2.0, you need to downgrade and get iTunes 7.5 back.
- First, uninstall iTunes 7.7. Once done, it will ask you to restart your computer. Do it.
- Once restarted, download iTunes 7.5.
- If it doesn’t run, in Windows, go to Start, Search, All Files and Folders. Type “iTunes Library.itl”. Find the file and delete it. Now it should work.
2. DFU Mode
- This mode is a little tricky. First, connect your iPod. iTunes will pop up and say it won’t work with this version of iTunes. That is ok. You just need to put it into DFU Mode.
- Turn up the sound on your computer. Next, turn your iPod off. Hold power and home for 10 (ten) seconds (as in 1001, 1002, 1003…). Let go of the power button while still holding the home button. Hold this until you here your computer give the “USB Connected Sound” (“Ba Dum” I think). Then let go. You are now in DFU Mode.
- Now in iTunes, hold Shift and Click restore. Select the 1.1.4 firmware.
- Let it do its thing.
- If you get an error when you restore, use ZiPhone to get your device out of restore mode by running the program and going to Advanced Features, Normal Mode.
- Once done, you should have firmware 1.1.4 on your iPod again. Jailbreak instructions are here.
There you go. Maybe you will listen next time. Also, as an added bonus, you can watch my first video on how to jailbreak. Maybe this will help you more. Let me know if it does, or if it is just a waste of time. If it isn’t a waste of time, let me know if I should make videos for other “Detailed Instructions”, such as SSHing or Jailbreaking.Good Luck.
