Dev Team releases 3Gs 3.0 JB Tools

Author : rooster

The Dev Team just released their tools (RedSn0w and UltraSn0w) for the 3Gs running at 3.0. They have also enabled support for Winterboard and MobileSubstrate running the 3.0 version.

They mention that Apple is closing Jailbreakable holes at an increasing pace and that its becoming more and more difficult to jailbreak devices.

Their warning Sounds:

ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilent against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version).  Apple has gotten very serious with the latest baseband — they’ve removed 180 (!) commands in an effort to cut down their exposure to holes.  So please always stay away from stock Apple IPSWs and instead use our tools as we release them.  These tools let you update your firmware without updating your baseband.

Those installing ultrasn0w will probably also need to do a single run of Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings.  We’re testing various fixes for that particular glitch.

Listen up for coming updates.

Updating to 3.0

Author : rooster

As most of you already know, Apple will be releasing the new iPhone and iPod Touch OS this summer, 3.0!! It is amazing! With hundreds of additional adjustments and new add-ons, Apple will only fortify its already solid position as the owner of the worlds best hand-held operating system.  The new SDK will allow for enormous strides to be made in the App world (including P2P)!

However, do not succumb to “Itchy Update Fingers” as The Dev Team terms it.  What they mean is not to update the second it is released. It will be free to all 3G owners and will cost iPod Touch Owners another $9.99 or so.  Although they are easily Jailbreakable, make sure you acquire the necessary update first.

Details:

Wait for a PwnageTool release that creates a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update that 3.0 will try to force upon your device.

Dev Team Update

Author : rooster

First of all.  QuickPwn has updated to 2.2.5-2 for Windows.

Second. Here is the dev team’s news for their tools concerning the 2.2.1 firmware from Apple.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
  2. Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.
  3. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband)Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.
  4. Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly.
  • PS: Here is the definition of Baseband:
The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.
Third: Concerning the 2G Jailbreak:
They have released the tethered version for those of you who want to risk it.  If you are iPod and Computer savvy, have nothing to lose, or are absolutely desperate for the JB, then go ahead an attempt to jailbreak it.
It all comes down to following directions. If you follow them step by step then the whole process isn’t bad at all.  Here is the link for the Red Sn0w JB:
Good Luck,
