Just a little update on the 3Gs Jailbreak from the Dev Team.
“We can jailbreak the 3GS right now. But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people. It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help. So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.”
Their intentions are pretty clear and so, for those of you already with the iPhone 3Gs, patience is the game.
We all know how Apple pumped up the gaming updates for the new iPhone 3Gs, but these updates may not be as useful as previously thought. What type of developer would restrict his target audience to just 3Gs owners? The answer: probably very few. So, although the new phone has the ability to handle better games, the market will most likely not see an enormous gaming graphics update until the majority of people have a device that can support them.
As for RedSn0w: Again I am sorry to announce that I’m currently unavailable to help you in great detail and that I only left some general instructions. As for the rate and timing of the updates: Please accept my apology but the times I’m allowed near the Internet are few and sporadic.

I visited the Apple store the other day and talked to a genius for a while about the new macbook pro. I’m considering buying one and then upgrading some of the specs. Instead of paying the extra $1000 to update to 8gb of RAM, I was planning on going to OWC.com and purchasing the same two sticks for $600. But I learned something very interesting, and slightly disappointing. For some odd reason the genius told me that updating will not help me because the RAM will not be interweaving making it less efficient, and ultimately, equal to just having the regular interweaving 4gb of RAM.
Just thought that was kind of informative for anyone planning on updating the specs on their mac.
* He also mentioned that there will most likely be a new iPod hitting the market in September, around the same time Snow Leopard and the iPhone 3.0 software will be released.

As most of you know, the Worldwide Developers Conference, otherwise known as WWDC, takes place every year and allows Apple to show off its newest products and updates. This years WWDC will be held at the Moscone West convention center in San Francisco.
The official dates are June 8th thru June 12!!

As you may have been expecting, Apple’s infamous World Wide Developers Conference is coming up. In 2008, they showed us the iPhone 3G, the iPhone OS 2.0, Mobile Me, and, of course, the App store! I think we should expect quite something this year.
The expected date for the conference is either May 16-22 or June 6-12. Personally, I believe June would be a better date because old Steve Jobs may make his triumphant return by this time.
As for what they may release, I believe the most notable will be Snow Leopard! This suspicion has been reinforced by the news that Apple has just seeded Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, termed Build 10A286, to the developers.
Well, we will see.

P.S. I heard another really cool thing that may be released in the future: A wireless sync! I wouldn’t get my hopes up for this year’s WWDC but who knows.

Ok guys, jailbreaking the 2G, as all you guys have probably noticed, has tragically taken a turn for the worse. I would not count if off completely but it certainly does look bleak. The Dev team has not made any formal announcements within a month. This makes me believe Apple’s latest stand on the JB may have influenced them. (When it actually should not have!)
Apple has officially stated their beliefs on the Jailbreaking of the iPhone (and only the iPhone):
“Current jailbreak techniques now in widespread use utilize unauthorized modifications to
the copyrighted bootloader and OS, resulting in infringement of the copyrights in those
programs. For example, the current most popular jailbreaking software for the iPhone,
PwnageTool, causes a modified bootloader and OS to be
installed in the iPhone, resulting in infringement of Apple’s reproduction and derivative works
rights.
In addition, as discussed in
Section II.B.2 above, the jailbroken OS enables pirated copies of Apple copyrighted content and
other third party content such as games and applications to play on the iPhone, resulting in
further infringing uses of copyrighted works and diminished incentive to create those works in
the first place.”
Fortunately, it is only illegal in Apple’s opinion. Jailbreaking is still Legal.
The EFF has sumarized the events quit brilliantly as such:
“As part of the 2009 DMCA rulemaking, EFF has asked the Copyright Office to recognize an exemption to the DMCA to permit jailbreaking in order to allow iPhone owners to use their phones with applications that are not available from Apple’s store (e.g., turn by turn directions, using the iPhone camera for video, laptop tethering).
Apple’s copyright infringement claim starts with the observation that jailbroken iPhones depend on modified versions of Apple’s bootloader and operating system software. True enough — we said as much in our technical white paper describing the jailbreak process. But the courts have long recognized that copying software while reverse engineering is a fair use when done for purposes of fostering interoperability with independently created software, a body of law that Apple conveniently fails to mention.
As for the DMCA violation, Apple casts its lot with the likes of laser printer makers and garage door opener companies who argue that the DMCA entitles them to block interoperability with anything that hasn’t been approved in advance. Apple justifies this by claiming that opening the iPhone to independently created applications will compromise safety, security, reliability, and swing the doors wide for those who want to run pirated software.
If this sounds like FUD, that’s because it is. One need only transpose Apple’s arguments to the world of automobiles to recognize their absurdity. Sure, GM might tell us that, for our own safety, all servicing should be done by an authorized GM dealer using only genuine GM parts. Toyota might say that swapping your engine could reduce the reliability of your car. And Mazda could say that those who throw a supercharger on their Miatas frequently exceed the legal speed limit.”
I believe their best point is that Apple is using FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) to hinder the use of the Jailbreak. Do not succumb to FUD.
I will post any news about the 2G JB as soon as I hear anything.

So, as rAwks already announced, the Dev team has done it, they have jailbroken the iPod Touch 2G!!
But, it’s not quit ready for the public yet. They have found away around Apple’s signature checks (by using their patch Red Sn0w) and can jb it. The only issue is that they must do this before every boot. This problem seems quit minor in the grand scheme of things and will most likely be fixed soon. I would think that they would just need to down a program that can boot the patch automatically.
If you want to know more about the subject here is a video by the Dev Team: http://qik.com/video/876511#

The cut and paste option has been near the top of the iPhone Flaws list. People have been complaining about its omission in the 3G and previous releases. 3rd party applications like OpenClip have tried filling the gap but have been largely unsuccessful… seeing as the newest update has made OpenClip unusable.
Well hopefully this is about to change. PasteBud, a web-based service will soon hit the market. Although the website is not up yet, the developers have promised it will bypass the App Store altogether. It will function through bookmarks and allow users to browse between pages and highlight text, hit a copy button, access another page, and paste the text.
The release date is approaching and we now know this important service will be available soon.
This would be amazing. iTunes and the Digital Rights Management are currently discussing a very hot topic: whether to freely distribute certain MP3s. The rumor this past week has concerned the verdict of these discussions and when both parties would meet a consensus. Supposedly this date was December 9Th. However, these rummors were just that and turned out only partially correct.
There is good news though. Apple is in negotiation with the three record labels (Sony, Universal, and Warner), and is in fact trying to get the music to be sold DRM-free. These negotiations are not going smoothly. But don’t lose hope, it is quite likely that we will have some sort of breakthrough, whether that be DRM-free music or not, in early 2009.

The Dev team has just released great news: QuickPwn & PwnageTool released for Firmware 2.2!!
They suggest that if you are still waiting for the 3G iPhone soft unlock the you should not us QuickPwn or use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
And depending on what you have:
SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
Since your phone is already unlocked you need only to update to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak. This, of course, will also add Cydia and Installer.
Locked iPhone 3G – Preserve Baseband
For people who have a locked 3G and want to update to 2.2 and at the same time preserve the current baseband software. To keep the baseband you have to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. The only problem for this, of you course, is that PwnageTool is only available on Mac OS X.
Locked iPhone 3G
If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.
iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn.
iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Update to 2.2 with iTunes and run QuickPwn.
iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry but still no good news here.
And here are the torrents:
PwnageTool 2.2.1 for Mac OSX is here
QuickPwn 2.2 for Mac OSX is here
QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows is here
Sorry, but the news has not really changed. The Dev Team stated that they are currently just working on the iPhone 3G soft Unlock. So for those iPhone owners that’s great, but they have put the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak on a tragic hold. In their words:
We are not working on the iPod Touch 2G at the moment, we certainly have interest in this platform as we have mentioned before and we have done some preliminary analysis, but currently all eyes are still on the iPhone 3G.
So be patient and as The Lone Stag has emphasized: Don’t Update!
