OpenSSH tutorial & Safety Tip

Author : rooster

All serious jailbreakers know that SSHing is an essential.

Here is a little walkthrough on how to install OpenSSH:

  1. Open Cydia and scroll down the main page to where it says “OpenSSH Access How-To.” Tap that option.
  2. On that page, click the blue linked text “Open SSH” in the first step. You’ll be presented with the OpenSSH package page. Click the install button in the top right corner, confirm when it’s finished, and return to Cydia.
  3. Open the Settings app from your home screen and go into your Wi-Fi settings. Click the little blue arrow next to the Wi-Fi network you’re currently connected to. Make a note of your IP address in the “IP Address” field (it should start with 10 or 192).
  4. To connect to your iOS device from your computer, use an SSH-capable application like Terminal on OS X or puTTy on Windows. Type ssh root@YOUR_IP_ADDRESS(replacing YOUR_IP_ADDRESS with your actual IP address). When prompted, enter your password. It’s alpine by default. Once finished, you’re connected! You can also use an SFTP application like Cyberduck to connect as well, but that’ll limit your interactions to pretty much only file transfers.
  5. Lastly, you want to change your password. To do this, type the passwd command. You’ll be asked for a new password. Type it (nothing will show up for privacy reasons) and press enter. Type it in again to confirm it. Assuming you type your password correctly, you will be told it was changed successfully.

That’s it! Enjoy SSH’ing with your iOS device.

IMPORTANT:

Make absolutely certain that you alter the password of the mobile account! As mentioned above, by default it is “alpine”, but until the root and the mobile account passwords are changed, your phone is at high risk!

How to convert an iPod Touch into an iPhone (kinda)

Author : rooster

  1. Jailbreak your iPod Touch – using pwnagetool (only necessary for the last option)
  2. An App that uses VoiP to make phone calls:

a. Skype – especially helpful for international calls but only helpful if you’re willing to pay a little money monthly

b. Fring – considered the most versatile; works with GTalk, SIP, AIM, MSN, ICQ, Twitter, Facebook. Has video chat over 3G!

c. Line2 – best option; Unlimited calling/texting in US and Canada; Make your own phone number;  comes with a caveat: is only free for 30 days and costs $10/month after that.

d. google Voice – My personal favorite at no cost except for international calls.

3. Getting Constant Wifi
Using the iPod at home usually poses little problem (that is, if you have wifi). The problem is, of course, going out of the house. One solution is the Verizon MiFi, Sprint Overdrive.                          This will only save you money if you were to chose AT&T’s unlimited plan (which is now actually changing).
Here is a cool graph describing how the financials will work out.

The battery Issue: the iPod will of course be fine all day, but the Mifi will not. The solution to this is the car charger for the hotspot Mifi.

4. If you jailbroke your iPod Touch, you can use Siphone SIP/VoiP, installed via Cydia. This is the best and most customizable route.

Ultimate pros/cons:

Pros

  • You save a ton of money over paying for an iPhone (or any newer smartphone, really), whether you get a 3G data plan or not.
  • Dropped calls are about as frequent as they are on an iPhone.
  • Headset features work exactly the same as they do on the iPhone, so the experience feels very similar.
  • The high-end iPod touch offers twice the storage as the high-end iPhone (64GB vs. 32GB).
  • The iPod touch, bereft of a 3G radio, gets better battery life.
  • If you get a cellular data hotspot (like the Verizon MiFi), you can keep your iPod touch in your pocket while placing the MiFi elsewhere for a better signal.
  • A lack of cellular reception in your home is completely irrelevant since you can place your calls over Wi-Fi.

Cons

  • Despite being pretty close, phone features are not quite as seamless on the iPod touch as they are on the iPhone.
  • Dropped calls are not as obvious as they are on an iPhone, so it’s not very easy to tell when you’ve lost someone without looking at the screen (bad for the car).
  • The iPod touch isn’t built with the intention you’ll use it as a phone, so you need to purchase a headset for it to really shine.
  • The iPod touch doesn’t provide a GPS, so you will need to purchase an external GPS unit at an addition cost if you want to use it as a navigation device in your car (although you could try relying on Wi-Fi signal triangulation).
  • The iPod touch’s camera isn’t nearly as good as the iPhone 4′s.
  • If you want to make calls using a cellular data hotspot (like the Verizon MiFi), you have to carry around two devices.
  • If you use a cellular data hotspot, its battery life is pretty poor (only up to four hours). While you can get an extended battery for your hotspot that’ll last the day, it’ll cost you around $100.

iPod Touch 4 en route. . . nice 3Gs camera to go with it.

Author : rooster

Well, Mac Rumors confirms, the iPod Touch with camera is coming very soon. For the past two years, Apple has updated its iPod Touch product line during the month of September. Since they have only been making them for 3 years, I think this next one will follow suite and pop up in two months.

The current, realistic I might add, speculation concerns the iPod Touch 3 having a 3.2 MP camera (just like the iPhone 3gs). Now you may ask, “well why not an iPhone 4 like camera?” The issue here in-lies in the size of the iPod Touch Model. If Apple keeps their current size and style, which in my opinion is getting a bit old, then there is almost no chance that the new iPod touch will contain any camera over 3.2 MP.

Now, we cannot abandon the reasoning that technology has advanced considerably in the past year or so; and maybe Apple has found a way to fit a smaller camera in the same old housing.

Personally, I hope for a brand new, remastered device.

Additionally, Digitimes reports that the new device will be capable of supporting video and photo as well as sport the new A4 processor currently found within the iPhone 4.

Possible Mini iPad

Author : rooster

So however ridiculous it may seem, some sources report that Apple may release a “Mini iPad”.

Now I know what you are thinking. . . . iPod Touch right, but no. This source reports that Apple is actually planning on releasing a smaller version of the iPad. The device should be a 5-7 inches and, of course, be appropriately cheaper than the current versions. The device is going to be marketed to group that needs a more portable device; one where text input may not be quite as important.

Digitimes quoted senior analyst Mingchi Kuo, who also works at Digitimes, as “citing talks with upstream component sources,” who have said the smaller iPad will measure between 5 – 7-inches, and will cost under $400 when it goes on sale early 2011. That price is not a stretch by any means of the imagination, considering the cheapest model of the iPad is available today for $499. Oh well, the idea of a mini iPad made me laugh.

Well Mr. Kuo, it makes me laugh as well.

MBP and MacPro More impending. Multi-tasking on iPhone 4.0?!?

Author : rooster

Update:

9 to 5 Mac and Mac Rumors both quoted the following tip for the next MBP and MacPro Release:

The MacBook Pro will be released on the same day as Mac Pro. We are scheduled for a Friday morning release but with the amount of updates may be pushed to Tuesday. ipad is number 1 and everything else is as time permits. Look for i5 in base macbook pro with i7 in higher end 15 and 17 inch.

Although this may be another false alarm, I’m hopping for the best!

And could multi-tasking be coming to the iPhone in its next update (4.0)? Although we certainly hope so, there are of course no guarantees with this type of tip either. Here is a quote from a much-trusted John Gruber:

People with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances tell AppleInsider that the Cupertino-based company has developed a “full-on solution” to multitasking on the iPhone OS but offered no specifics on how the technology would optimize resource conservation and battery life — two of the most critical issues surrounding the matter, alongside security.

From a user-facing perspective, Apple plans to deliver a multi-tasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system, according to those same people. It was requested that specifics be withheld at this time, as the iPhone Software 4.0 remains under development and reportedly has a quite ‘way to go’ before it’s ready for prime time.

more to come.

Don’t Update. . . unless your battery % is wrong

Author : rooster

Apple’s recent firmware update, 3.1.3, is unnecessary unless you have been experiencing issues with your battery percentage. But because some people will want to update anyway while and keep their iPhone/iPod Touch  jailbroken, the dev-team announces PwnageTool 3.1.5.

The Dev-team gives the details:

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

Here is the torrent link and here are further instructions. . .

Have fun but be careful.

But something was quitely changed by Apple today as well. . . .
Apple has removed the restrictions surrounding Voice Over Internet Protocol in the new iPhone OS SDK. This means that users may now use VoIP services over 3G networks. iCall, the first of a presumable plethora of VoIP apps to be released, is already available on the App store.

Better Web Apps, 128GB iPod Touch & 64GB iPhone

Author : rooster

Apple recently released an update that allows web-apps to be more fully integrated unto the iPhone/iPod Touch.  They have removed the obnoxious “web-bar” from the top and allowed an integrated bottom tool bar that doesn’t move when you scroll.  Good move by Apple as this will surely boost App development since building a web app can be done in a graphical user interface while building .api(s) does take a considerable amount of manual Objective-C programming. But the biggest change this brings is the dis-intermediation of the Apple filter which rejects a huge percentage of offline applications.

Toshiba has announced its creation of 64GB chips. Since the iPhone only has one storage slot as opposed to the iPod Touch’s two slots, we will probably see 64GB iPhones and 128GB iPod Touches in the near future.

The World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) is rumored to take place on either June 28th or July 2nd.

PwnageTool 3.1.4

Author : rooster

Dev Team has released PwanageTool 3.1.4. Unfortunately, there is still no support for the iPod Touch 3G. But for the majority of users their latest release will do. Here is summary by the Dev Team:

iPhone 3G

Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw

iPhone 3G(S)

Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod Touch 2G

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw to your already jailbroken device using iTunes.

iPod Touch 3G

At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.

* the above applies to devices that HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY JAILBROKEN. There is no current program that will jailbreak iPod Touches who have not jailbroken before, but the dev team said they will make one if demand peaks.

* PwnageTool will create your .ipsw. Then go into iTunes and hold down shift will clicking restore to locate the .ipsw.

HERE IS PwnageTool 3.1.4

Have Fun,
