Update 10/22/08 – If you have iPod Touch 2.0+ software the easiest way is now QuickPwn. We have a tutorial on jailbreaking with QuickPwn and also a corresponding instructional jailbreaking video on youtube.

Update 8/15/07 – If you have an iPod Touch with the 2.0 software the easiest way to jailbreak is to downgrade to 1.14 (youtube video tutorial) and then use the ZiPhone method.

Update 4/1/07 – Here is a new method to jailbreak you iPod Touch 1.14 firmware with the ZiPhone method.

Updated 3/08/07 – Here is the best method for jailbreaking the iPod Touch 1.1.3 firmware. Right now there isn’t a good way to jailbreak 1.1.4 so if you have an iPod Touch with that version I would wait. 1.1.3 Jailbreaking Tutorial

Updated 1/28/07 – The newest iPod Touch firmware 1.13 needs to be downgraded back down to 1.11 to jailbreak your iPod Touch. Instructions on how to do this can be found in this 1.13 jailbreak post.

Updated 1/01/07 – To jailbreak your iPod Touch you will need software version 1.11 on your iPod Touch. If you have version 1.12 you will need to downgrade for the jailbreak to work. Instructions to Downgrade to 1.11 from 1.12

Updated 12/01/07 - The easiest way to jailbreak your iPod Touch is using the jailbreak tutorial by aznboi101.

Update 11/01/07 – There is currently a new easier way to jailbreak your iPod Touch. You will need to use the wifi on your iPod Touch and go to jailbreakme.com. This will then use the tiff exploit and have you install a program that will then let you install 3rd party apps on your iPod Touch.

Basics:

You will need to use the TIFF safari hack and also run the TouchFree software.

- Download Touchfree

- If you don’t have .Net 3.0 Framework it will prompt you to install it. Once you have installed the framework it will then proceed with the unlock

-You will need to use the tiff exploit by going to: http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com

- There will be three steps in a row where you will be prompted to turn off your iPod Touch and turn it back on…

- Once you have completed this 3 times you will then be finished and should see a installed on your list of applications

You will need to use the TIFF safari hack and run the iJailbreak software. You will need an Intel Mac.

TIFF Exploit

On your iPod touch, navigate in Safari to http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com . It will crash your Safari and return you to the home screen, but this is expected; it means the code was executed and you will be able to browse the file system with full read/write access. Once you do this, iTunes will be unable to sync properly with your device until you re-enable it later in the instructions (it will only show 300MB of space in iTunes; this is normal until you correct it later in the instructions).

FAQ

Help I bricked my iPod Touch?
You need to fully restore your iPod Touch by holding the sleep and home button until your iPod Touch turns off. Keep holding them and eventually the apple logo will appear…now release the sleep button while still holding the home button. If do everything went right … you should connect to iTunes and it should do a full restore.

Warning

Jailbreaking your iPod Touch is not fool proof and things can go wrong. We can’t be held responsible. (We will try to help you fix it though…)

The jailbreak.toc2rta.com/ hack is not working on my touch. It just gives me an error message saying “safari can’t connect to the server…” Is this happening to anyone else? I had tried it before, using the 33 step method (which I didn’t know what i was doing apparently), and i could access that exploit, but now I cannot.

Is the hack no longer on their server?

@ erNIEves – If you have the apple icon screen, keep holding down sleep and home until you see the restore mode screen (that’s the picture of the dock connector going into the iTunes logo) – it could be 30 seconds of holding those buttons down.

OMG!!! i desperately need help! the iJailbreak worked for the 1st time, i had all the iPhone apps runing, but the Summerboard ruined the whole thing!! it put the dock up on the top, overlaying the 1st line of app!! which mean there’s nothing at the buttom, i can’t access music, videos etc. so i restored the iPod using iTunes, then i tried to Jailbreak it again, that’s when everything went wrong!! the iPod kept on freezing during the jailbreak, now, the iPod can’t even be recognized by iTunes! i really need help!!!!!!!!!!! hey guys! under desperation, i found a method to resolve the problem i had mentioned above, just go to settings, under General, go to Reset, and the Erase all content and settings.

after that iTunes can recognise the ipod once again, but u do need to reformat it.

Ok, I had the same problem as a few above and maybe I can help. I first installed installer.app and did the mistake of installing SummerBoard 2.1.1. This basically ruined me touch, as the dock moved to the top of the screen and I couldn’t access music/video/photos/itunes. Then, when I tried rebooting, it froze at the apple screen.

Then, when I tried to restore it in itunes, I got that stupid error that everyone else is getting that says “Cannot reformat, error -18″ or something. What I did to fix this was:

1) Exit itunes.
2) With the touch plugged in, hold sleep and home button until it shuts off, but KEEP holding them until the apple comes back on.
3) When you see the apple, let go of the sleep button but still hold the home button until the “connect to iTunes” screen appears.
4) Then, start up iTunes and it should recognize that your ipod needs to be restored and it worked for me that time.

I don’t know how successful that will be for others, but I am holding my fresh touch right now and I couldn’t be happier that it works.

I finally figured out how to get past step 1 what I did was connect the ipod to the usb after i visited the url http://ijailbreak.com/ on the safari browser, after that i clicked continue to step 2 and it worked fine, just remember when you plug in the ipod itunes must be closed so you can continue to step 2. Now all i need to figure out is how to add NES roms to play games and how to install more applications…anyone got through that part???

it worked for me… i had to restore it 1st tho .. but after that it worked . the program is great.. games, themes wallpapers fun stuff and alot more . some games only work for iphone and some work for itouch .. if you get the Cannot reformat, error -18 error then try foslock’s steps they worked for me ! —

Hey Ive been looking at this, i want to do this to my iPod touch little scared of doing it, but i noticed everyone is getting theirs restored. but will you be able to update the new Firmwares when Apple comes out with new updates? i know its not on everyones mind right now but i just dont want to be stuck with a out of date ipod touch… Also has anyone figured out how to make the WiFi connect to 802.1x WPA security? i know their was a app called Connect for the iPhone that came out a while ago and i thought i read that it would fix that prob. but whatever any answers would be great. thanks guys and congrats on your freed iPod

SO, I followed all the jailbreak instructions, including the ‘helpful’ advice at the end about changing your master password so no one can hack your ipod touch over wifi.
However, after installing a few apps, the phone started doing regular reboots. When I would do the on/home button thing and reboot it, it would come up with the main ipod interface and immediately show the “slide to turn off.” when I did that, it would just reboot.

I decided to restore it but I’m getting “the Ipod “Ipod” could not be restored. An unknown error Error -9 has occurred. Any help appreciated.

Forget the website they are talking about cause I tried doing that and it didn’t work at all. go to http://www.slovix.com/touchfree/jb/ on your ipod touch and it will automatically jailbreak it and install installer on it so you can start installing stuff.

sorry mate but your ipod is bricked, i don’t think u’ll be able to fix it. When did you buy it?, because if you have the receipt you can still take it back and say that you couldn’t put music or anything on it anymore as soon as you put it in your computer, this is only going to work if you have had it less than 28 days.

After upgrading the firmware on my iPod Touch to version 1.1.2 I attempted to jailbreak my iPod…unfortunately it didn’t work so I tried to restore it back to version 1.1.1…..During this process I got an error:

“The iPod “iPod” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1604)”

This both worried me and angered me that I could have done something so stupid!

After much reading I found a solution that worked….I did not see it here so I am posting it for all else who may have made the mistake…

FIX FOR ERROR “The iPod “iPod” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1604)”

Simply take your iPod and plug it into a DIFFERENT computer that also has iTunes. It will try and sync to no avail saying its in restore mode. Simply click restore and let it do its work. After it restarts your iPod Touch all should be well. Simply take it back to your computer and it will sync up no problem.

I dont know why this worked…but it infact DID work. Thank heavens

Due to the overwhelming requests on how I got the ipod touch to send and receive calls, here it is!

1. Use the thinnest screwdriver that you can find and prop out the glass touchscreen.

2. This is the hard part: Get your existing cellphone, take all it’s guts out and jam it all inside the ipod.

3. Put back the glass touchscreen and reboot the ipod. If you encounter any problems just call apple support.

How to fix Bricked ipod (fatal error)

1) Exit itunes.
2) With the touch plugged in, hold sleep and home button until it shuts off, but KEEP holding them until the apple comes back on.
3) When you see the apple, let go of the sleep button but still hold the home button until the “connect to iTunes” screen appears.
4) Then, start up iTunes and it should recognize that your ipod needs to be restored and it worked for me that time.

1 on pc go onto touchdev.net
2 click on decrypt firmware
3 go to where it said firmware version and highlight 1.1.1
4 paste onto new internet page and let it download to desktop
5 after download put ipod into recovery mode
6 go back onto itunes and hold shift and click restore
7 find file and double click
8 let it do its thing then done

Recovery mode
1 have ipod touch on
2 hold sleep and home button(dont slide to turn off)
3 hold both until u see the apple and let go of the sleep button but hold home button
then you’ll see it wants u to hook up into ur computer

for a mac shift is option

I said I would report later. Well I managed to get the Touch back to 1.1.1 and apply the 0.3 iJailbreak that I used before now everything is back together thanks the the advice given here!

Personally I will leave alone now maybe until I see a way of applying 1.1.2 without busting what I have.

Any thoughts. By the way I am not experienced with Terminal and Cyberduck but CyberD is fascinating and I had a look at the file structure in the iPod

i am wondering why people choose to jailbreak it. I watched tons of videos on youtube about jailbreaking iPod touch, but I still don’t see benefits from using jailbreaking applications ( Weather – I don’t need, Stocks – I don’t need, Games – I have PSP why play games on iPod touch) The only thing I would like to have is Notes and Maps…. but I don’t think i would use them…

I am also worried that jailbreaking iPod now, will not be useful in the future if there is some new firmware for iPod touch. I am going to hold on until next firmware release 1.1.2+ then try jailbreak after.

Since my 1.1.1 touch has been JB’d it is having great difficulty in syncing with iTunes. Sometimes connects – sometimes just hangs iTunes – Sometimes I can upload Music but usually it just hangs.

When I jailbreaked first time (before aborted trip to 1.1.2 I was able to Sync happily.

Ideas anyone here please?

Ok, so I can’t find anyone else with this problem. I downgraded to 1.11, then ran AppSnapp, so far everything is good, then I installed OKtoPrep. Finally, I open ijailbreak and click to jailbreak it, it goes through but then freezes…or quits running at the very end when it say “restarting device”. If I stop it and restart manually it says that my device is in restore mode and that I have to restore it. What did I do wrong? Thank in advance for any help.

Thankyou Foslock #33, you saved me dearly. Everyone else that has had trouble trying to restore your iPod back to factory, try #33′s steps. I originally did it on the computer that I usually synced my iPod with, and iTunes recognized it, but I couldn’t connect to the iTunes Server to Restore. After that, I used my second computer that I never plugged my iPod into before, and it was recognized and I redownloaded the 1.1.2 update, and the restore worked perfectly. I WISH EVERYONE WITH BEST OF LUCK WITH REPAIRING THEIR iPods.

once you install this and things go wrong, your only option is to restore. Sorry, but this doesn’t work. You’ve officially bricked your touch and apple will NOT support it of you try to take it to get checked out. You’ll be out $300-$400 bucks. Apple is approving third party apps in february. my advice is to disregard jadeee, and dont freak out about jailbreaking…because it is actually very quick and easy if you know what you are doing from the start. But if you have not done it yet, maybe you should wait until february the third party approval.

sadly the iphone aps arnt onn the installer..but there is a way to get them on it…lol…i love hacking…….in the installer there is another tab called sources..
click it and then hit edit, then add this source to your sources….PS make sure to save it if it asks to

I have installed the installer and some apps then when i went to put all my stuff back onto the ipod touch as i lost it all when i restored to 1.1.1 it asked me if i wanted a new ipod setup or restore from backup so i did and it kept the firmware version and just updated the content and it was back to how it was but with 1.1.1 and all of my apps; well pleased!

I was having all sorts of trouble. I read through 75% the comments and got really annoyed with ppl not doing the same and asking about the lil blue box on the big white page before I tried it but that helped for me.

So downgrade. Turn the iPod off then on, make sure to eject from iTunes, and then run the install.

and this is the steps and tips to jailbreak ipod touch

1: check firmware, to check firmware plug it into itunes and look or go to settings>genaral>about, if 1.1.1 then follow step 2, if 1.1.2 then follow step 3

2: if 1.1.1 actavate wifi and open up safri. once open then go to jailbreakme.com.once at the site you go to the verry bottom and select install appsnap. once clicked it could either install fully or exit out of safari if it does then try again (i had to at least 2 times… but it worked) once installed then go to installer and install away. one more thing you have to remember to do is install trusted sources. (google search). have fun!!!

3: if 1.1.2 then only one more step to follow. first you go to google.com and google search “ipod 1.1.1 software” (or sompthing loke that). and download the software version to your desktop. the software size should only be at least 150 mb (carefull not to down load anything to low) once saved to desktop you must open up itunes and plug in your touch. ittl pop up the icon to your touch summerie. shift click the update firmware button and then go to desktop and select the firmware virsion. once downgraded, (or as itunes calles it “upgraded”) you follow step #2 (cuz its 1.1.1 now)

the advantages to downgradeing for appsnap are great
not only can you use third party apps but you can also use dictionarys read books and play awsom games (my favirote is tap tap reviloution with the gutar hero 3 theme). and once done you can download an app through installer to prepare it for 1.1.2 and once installed to 1.1.2 everything will still be there and ittl be great
the disadvantages are that if you get trigger happy and install unknown sources without research and download all the apps from them you can possibaly screw it up cuz im guessing that there is some fat guy out there scarfing down a twinki while pondiering on how to put a virus on the ipod and mass distrubuit it to the world cuz hees inscure about his weight and was picked on while he was a little…big… kid

i might sound young but i have been doing things like this seince i was 10 and i have alot of experince in this feild and i am already a seinor in high school with an i.q avrage of 145

so then i tried setting it as a new ipod to my computer as it still recognises it although it still states error and will NOT restore my music therefore the ipod assumes that there is only 300mb in it’s memory in it.

To Gunnadoo, what you should do is make sure you have itunes open,then plug in your itouch,hold the Wake/Sleep button at the same time, keep holding it even when you see the apple sign, your computer should recognise it,then you will have to restore your ipod and then sync. everything back onto it again.
This should hopefully work.

Everytime my daughter plugs her ipod touch into the computer the keyboard starts going crazy, you can’t type or anything. I have to totally reinstall the bluetooth, EVERYTIME!!!! Does anyone know why this is happening or how to stop it? Thanks for all your help!!!

But i cant seem to figure this one out! i have installer on my ipod touch version 1.1.4 i followed all th ziphone steps, i installed BSD subsystem and openSSH, yet when i try to download apps, themes or wallpapers, it either comes up with an error of some sort, or it says its done downloading and done installing. but when i go to the home screen and let my ipod refresh, and when i get done rebooting it, the stuff is never applied. when i tap on uninstall, it will say its downloading package, cleaning up and so on. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE? Please, some one help me!

It seemed pretty cool, although I developed an error in Mail which kept on saying I had unread messages for one e-mail account, even when I had deleted all of them.
However, I have read of other people having this problem, so it may not be a jailbreak thing…
Restoration is very easy (doing it now to see if it fixes Mail).
I won’t jailbreak again, but that’s because I’m incredibly paranoid!
Most people say it won’t harm it and you can restore it to make it as good as new.
If anyone out there has ‘bricked’ their iPod/iPhone – have you tried restoring? I haven’t heard of any cases were it didn’t work, but would like to know.

Now i’m trying to download it from LimeWire, but i don’t want it to screw up my ipod since i’ve already voided my warranty.
