The New WinPwn

Author : The Lone Stag

Well, I think that it finally happened. The guys who brought you WinPwn (mainly cmw) have made jailbreaking way too easy. I looked at WinPwn 2.5 and what a difference it was from the previous versions. It is so easy, a caveman could do it (sorry Geico). But seriously, when the term Guided User Interface is spoken, this is what people mean. I don’t think that I even need to post instructions on how to use it. I will, however, answer problems people have been having with it (if there are any) directly on this post. I know, I am breaking my own rules by actually answering posts, but I am pretty confident that I won’t be getting many questions.

By the way, I am pretty close to picking a new writer for this site. Since jailbreaking is pretty solid now, we will be focusing on more applications and general Apple news. I think by the end of the week, we will have some new posts that I am sure you readers will enjoy.

The program did what it was supposed to, and worked great, but I did have one problem. When the program started running, a bunch of little black squares appeared all over my screen.. I just moved the program window around the screen and it cleared them up, but every time the program would start on a new step, the squares would re-appear… not a big deal.. just kind of annoying

hey… Just wondering… I’m on 1.1.4 jailbroken using ziphone, and if I want to upgrade to the newest version using winpwn, should I uninstall all my applications first? Or will it delete all my stuff in the process?

zibri (creator of ziphone) has yet to release a date for his new version. his blog states that it is currently in a beta stage. so just be patient

no u do not need to uninstall all ur applications….for you to upgrade to 2.0.0.X you do not need winpwn at all. all u need is the restore file. once u restore ur ipod with the new version it will delete everything…and from there, u may use winpwn to jailbreak your ipod

The jailbreaking method now is way different from the previous ziphone way. This time round, winpwn 2.5 will custom made your fw and you have to manually do a restore through your itunes – simply in DFU, shift-click your custom-made fw. I believe effectively speaking, you don’t even have to use winpwn if you can obtain a version of the custom-made fw, which in fact, is in torrent.

    Am I right about this?

Although I still did a full restore before upgrading.. but there are a few important apps missing in fw 2.02, apps like wildeyes..

How do I get boss tools installed? I looked for it and couldn’t find it…

  10. shimojimatto, September 6, 2008:

After using winpwn 2.5 to make my custom firmware using 2.0.2 … and installing that firmware to the ipod… Cydia and Installer software works great.

However, “App Store” software will load, and then the ipod will immediately return to the springboard screen. No App Store software will run. Is this an unpleasant side effect of jailbreaking this time around? Or just a glitch that the makers of winpwn haven’t fixed? Or is it just me?

    @shimojimatto

yeah i used winpwn 2.5 beta with firmware 2.02 and i have the same problem!

i might try and re-pwn it with 2.01

I had the same problem, solved it by going to “Authorize Computer” in the Store menu of iTunes. After doing this I synced the iPhone with iTunes and then the apps mysteriously started working. Must be some kind of permissions issue…

dangerousdave is right. just do what he says and its done. everithing works again

The regular iTune Apps do not work with my iPhone after I use WinPwn to jailbreak it. I was just curious if I did something wrong that it wouldn’t work or is that just the way it it?

Incase they are suppose to work, when I click on the icon for an app it starts to open, after 4 seconds it returns to the homescreen of the iPhone.

  15. Mike Brown, September 9, 2008:

Sorry I missed dangerous dave’s comment.

I can’t find the Authorize computer in the iTunes menu. Are you referring to the iTunes menu on your phone? Or on the computer?

  16. shimojimatto, September 9, 2008:

@Everyone with “App Store” app problems. After loading the custom firmware onto your ipod touch or iphone… BEFORE you open cydia or installer… you have to download and run a app from the “App Store”… just install and load “remote” or something else free. After that, you can open Cydia and install all the other goodies.

I don’t know what causes it, but it took a lot of hunting to find the solution. I hope that the creators of winpwn add some kind of disclaimer to the program about this… sure is confusing.

    I hope that helps!
