Should You Jailbreak or Not?

Author : The Lone Stag

I have gotten too many emails on whether or not to jailbreak your iPod.

DO IT.

Seriously, you need to at least try. So far, there is no possible way to completely break your iPod other than throwing it on the ground and jumping on it. I have bricked and “broken” my iPod so many times that I have lost count. This is because I try beta apps and jailbreak methods. You don’t have to. That is why I’m here.

You don’t have to worry if something goes wrong. If it won’t connect to iTunes, you have a problem during the jailbreak, or some other problem where your iPod won’t run correctly, then do a hard restore.

How to do a hard restore

  1. Plug your iPod into your computer.
  2. Hold power and home until the iPod turns off. KEEP HOLDING.
  3. When the Apple logo shows up, let go of the power button. KEEP HOLDING HOME.
  4. Hold home until the “Connect to iTunes” logo appears.
  5. Restore.
  6. Your iPod is fixed and you can go back to doing whatever you wanted to do.

I know some of you are thinking, “Why should I jailbreak my iPod?” Well there are many reasons.

  • Add applications that make the most out of your iPod such as Instant Messaging, Screencapturers, Customize options, Computer Controllers, etc.
  • Add awesome games such as Parking Lot, Tetris, Mah Jong, Gameboy games, etc.
  • Get the January Update Package with the Wiggle Feature for FREE.
  • Add dictionaries, Youtube downloaders, free music downloaders, etc. etc. etc.
  • Learn how to jailbreak by reading this

This is a cool thing to do. For those of you who have jailbroken, post a comment. Inspire some iPodder into hacking his iPod. Give positive feedback. List why you jailbroke, how it works, or at least if it was worth it. You could change someone’s entertainment experience. I might have helped you, why don’t you give back to the community.

Enjoy.

I completely agree. I am unfortunately too busy to be on here as much as I was during spring Break. However, these guys are very courteous to be helping all of us as much as they do. I am looking forward to the next big thing they come out with.

Keep it up guys and Thanks.

I’m also one of those who thought it’s stupid to jailbreak my ipodtouch but my curiosity got the better of me. After reading all things about jailbreaking, I finally decided to take the plunge. Btw, I just followed the instructions posted in this site and there was my iPod touch screaming out loud for applications.

Jailbreaking is not really a problem, installing “some” applications is. I’ve experienced keyboard freeze when installing a host of applications so I have to restore my ipodtouch over and over. My tip is install only one application at a time then after restarting check whether your device is working properly, especially when you’re typing on it.

    Go jailbreak your ipodtouch.

Only just jailbroke my itouch, and was very wary at first, but when I came across this site I was convinced.

It’s the best thing i’ve ever done. One of the things i like most about my nano was the games, and was pretty miffed when the Itouch didnt have any, so i’ve more than made up for it :]

    Thankyou So much

I always wanted a psp to get custom firmware on it. Essentially hack one for kicks to help out a friend. The only problem is, that there is a risk to doing that. When i got my very own Ipod Touch, im like hey, shouldn’t there be a way to hack this like the psp?” to myself. so i googled it and what do you know i found this nifty site (thanx to the maker) and i didn’t even have it for more then 10 hours yet and i jailbroke it. My only regret is why didn’t i do it 9hours sooner lol. Amazing to jailbreak. You also get bragging rights with it for being the only one amongst your friends to not only have a iphone/touch but have roms, games, cool apps, etc and make the most out of them too! I don’t know how ide live without my touch. I use it from entertainment to school work, except i multi task lol (music playing while im doing work). Jailbreaking is definitley worth at least trying. There NO I MEAN NO RISK TO DOING IT. IT IS EXTREMELEY SIMPLE, YOU CAN BACK UP ALL OF YOUR FILES AND PUT THEM BACK ON AFTER AFTER AFTER YOU JAILBREAK IT. I highly suggest it. Anyone can do it even newbs at computers (not being offesive we were all newbs when we first started too). So jailbreak and enjoy. and if you do mess it up there are ways to restore it too. Check this site out the maker has put a lot of valuable work. (credit him too if you refer it to anyone else)

Actually, the best way to restore, would be to hold the power button until it turns off, let off the power button, hold the home button, plug you ipod/iphone into the pc, and continue holding home until it goes into restore.

    Hello,

    I just jailbroke my Ipod Touch 32Gb yesterday. Everything was fine until somehow this morning I went to my parents house and tried to connect with the wifi there. Every time I tried to connect and when the AP prompt for WPA passwd it went away and Im back to the home screen. Now, the issue is when I tried to reboot using sysinfo tool it rebooted and somehow I got the pop up screen – Edit Home Scree – with dismiss button. It went on and on looping infinitely. Below is the steps that I have taken to solve but the issue still remains;

    1. Tried to connect to the PC and open Itune – Itune cannot detect the Ipod
    2. Tried to do hard reset and wait for the pic of ‘connect to itune’ – the pic never came up.

    Anyone can help me here.

somehow I have missed out Dave’s comment just right before mine here. I tried and it seems to work. Thanks Dave. :)

I jailbroke mines a few days after I bought it. The only reason why I didn’t jailbreak before was cuz I didn’t have the time.to research before doing it. I had my psp hacked by a friend and I love it, so many things you could do and undo. I remember hearing about been able to hack one of the earlier ipods so I said why wouldn’t this one be unlockable? I started searching and found everything I needed, specially here(thanx guys) the only thing that kept me from doing it at the beginning was not knowing if you could reset it to factory settings but once I found out that you could. I did it the same day and I love it…so many apps available its unbeliveble what you can do to your ipod touch/iphone once you get the tools.

hey, I am getting an iPod Touch 2g, and I’m just thinking. if you can get so many awesome applications free, why bother? are there especially good ones only available through jailbreaking? Also, what are some of the neat things that you can do on a jailbroken iPod Touch? I’ve seen many videos on youtube, but all they show are the apps.
    Thanx

i just bought a used 16 gb 1st gen ipod touch online and it works fine but the person that i bought it from was supopsed to include some software on a CD for me and never did. it has a good amount of games and stuff but I thought he said not to get the newest version of itunes. does it matter which version i download? i may have been thinking of the firmware version by accident, i’m not good at this stuff (obviously) and i don’t want to loose what’s on there. also – anyone know where i can download more free games? i’ve found a good amount of discussion but no links to actual websites to get free games. rumors of tyson’s punchout have me interested! Thanks!

  27. THANKYOUSOMUCH, November 2, 2008:

WOWOWO… thank you soooo much. thankyou thankyou thankyou. i love you. no homo. wowow. you dont understand. i bought my ipod touch a couple of months ago, and i jail breaked it. then i downloaded all these apps, 3 months past, my dad got a i pod touch 3G. so i play around and show my dad how to use the i touch. then i decided to download a random app on mine. but the loading button appeared but didnt seem to stop loading, then the ipod touch shut down, i couldnt get it to turn back on even when holding the home and power button at the same time. one week past, i call the apple costumer service. i got nervous b/c i read all these comments on how if the apple company/workers find out you hacked, they wont help fix the problem and wont replace ipod touch. so i called, my comp. wouldnt turn on, so i told the guy i would call back later. 3 weeks gone by. i was sooo depressed. i figured it would be no use calling back apple since i was dreading the fact that the guy might find out i hacked and tell me it was usless. wowow. ipod touch was “taking over my life” i coulded live w/out it literally. i couldnt find any results on google that fit my problem until now, one month past, i happen to find this blog. THANK YOU SO MUCH. ok, now im going to get some music on my ipod on i tunes. thank you. wow… what a releif. :D

If it makes you feel better, you can get free music on the internet and then put it on your iPod. You don’t even have to jailbreak an iPod to even get free music, it’s the internet. lol

no jailbreaking your ipod is not illegal apple just doesnt want you to do it… there is no possible way to get in trouble for doing it

  39. Joey, May 4, 2009:

Does Jailbreaking mean free internet, all the time too. Do the new Iphone 3G, do u have to pay for internet, or is it wifi? j/w it’s the difference between me getting one or not, because I had a touch and I loved the wifi, idk if the iphone is the same or what it’s deal is?

  40. xXD34DCH1CK3NXx, May 14, 2009:

I haven’t jailbroken my iPod touch yet and I know I will in the next week but I have something to say to all of you who are scared to. Your iPod [and or] iPhone is not going to bleed or die. It’s just a little firmware update. Who really cares if it’s legal or illegal. It’s not like anyone is gonna do anything about it. And if you’re worried if all of your music, apps, or videos ect., who cares! All of that stuff is in your iTunes library so when you are done jailbreaking it, you just drag and drop onto your iPod.

  41. FloRida, May 16, 2009:

Help.. I tried to jailbreak my ipod touch 2.2.1 16GB this morning, by using Redsn0w (found it on youtube) when at the end, my ipod wouldn’t reboot (which seems to be a problem many youtubers had) i
had to hard restore it… (thanx for the advice on this website)#

This took me about 1 hr for the restore, and then a further 3 hours for the following synch…
I was already kinda annoyed that it hadn’t worked, but now however, I cannot connect to my wi-fi.
I have wi-fi connection, it is on, in settings it’s connected, the wi-fi bar is completely filled, but no apps (incl. facebook, app store, safari or google earth) work, because “cannot connect to the internet”

I am desperate for help, and not at all convinced I should EVER try jailbreaking again :s

    Thank you in advance!

  45. Devyn, July 22, 2009:

I don’t think that jailbreaking is good at all. After all of these problems that people have it’s just not worth the risk. Anyways the iPod touch is fine the way it is. That’s just not worth the risk to me. I would like to jail break my iPod but if it was flawless I would.

  46. K!ZZA, August 31, 2009:

uh i jailbroke my i ipod and apple replaced it when the screen started stuffing up :S so i see no bad points to jailbreaking it at all it doesn’t slow it down unless backgrounder or other apps are going and its just as stable and now does twice as much

  47. Spencer, September 2, 2009:

I jailbroke my ipod and it was a great thing to do, there are so many possibilities of customization and apps etc.

Customization was the main reason for the jailbreak (although free apps is nice), there are so many themes on Cydia/Icy, plus the ability to create your own theme on a Mac/PC.

If i was unsure about the pros and cons, i would let my iPod run out of its warranty, then go mad and jailbreak

  48. Kris, September 28, 2009:

Yea. You NEED to jailbreak your ipod. i jailbroke mine for the themes and FREE APPS. its SUPER EASY FAST AND FREE.
