There was some initial hope that when the iPod Touch was released the community would be able to hack the iPod Touch so you could use it with Voip applications. The problem was Apple took out the line in audio speaker on the iPod Touch and the hope was all but dead.
Tuaw has reported that on hackers personal iPod Touch Mods blog he has been able to test the iPod Touch and has confirmed that the audio input pins are indeed working on the iPod Touch. He was able to record a smallĀ audio clip by adding a microphone to his old dock and connecting the line in pins to the audio source on the iPod Touch. This opens the door for a commercial product that would allow for users to plug-in a microphone and use Voip applications.

If only the thing had bluetooth, you could leave your cheap cellphone in your pocket and turn the ipod touch into a pseudo iPhone…
I really have a feeling that this is what Apple had in mind all along; think about the iPhone’s development path and how it started with the Nokia Rokr thing . . .
they know they can’t compete openly with the big guys, so it’s all slow and strategic.
