Gizmodo has just received word that the iPod Touch and the iPhone run the exact same binaries and will be able to run the same applications (This was from an unofficial tipster inside Apple).
This is great news and means that the iPhone apps will almost immediately be on the iPod Touch…(if this is correct). I don’t think apple will officially release the apps so it looks like you will need to install them using the same method as the iPhone Tutorial. The apps that are missing from the iPod Touch are Mail, Google Maps, Stock and Weather.

I think they left these out so that AT&T did not try to assinate Steve Jobs.
I have already got my money set aside for the touch, and cant wait to see what other apps we will be able to put on it.
Same here man.
Gonna get the iPod Touch with 16GB and make it the bomb!
The reason that the iPhone is not ‘officially’ open to 3rd party apps is AT&T and conflict with cell service. Why would they not open the iPod Touch up to third-party developers if the only connectivity system is WiFi? We all have 3rd Party stuff on laptops and desktops and they play fine right? The why are we thinking that the Touch will be closed as well?
The danger here is if Apple releases the source to developers, and the rumors that the Touch and iPhone are the same OS and junk, then it would be really easy to reverse engineer the software on the iPhone and really open it up. I think that there are probably very subtle differences in the products source code in order to protect the AT&T network so that people don’t take advantage of it.
The Touch is Apple’s response to the cry for a device that allows as much development as the Mac allows. I wouldn’t be surprised if we learned in the coming weeks that this device will be wide-open for development. Without AT&T holding having a say in the product and restricting its use, will Apple really make this device adhere to the same rules as the iPhone?
That would be so awesome if the iPod Touch and iPhone could install Open Office. It’d make work a whole lot easier completing documents on the road as I listen to Guns N’ Roses.
you can type word documents on the iPod touch. Google soho
I mean zoho
I’ve been looking into buying an Ipod Touch because it will be nice to have wi-fi at school all around campus and obviously have my music. The only thing i haven’t heard is if it can hold some type of “Office Word” app. So does this zoho work? will i be able to type things up in class? Thanks…
