Author : kdollar

Did you upgrade your iPod Touch and want to downgrade to 1.1.1?  Here is a tutorial I found in the comments by tai.

ipod touch 1.1.2 downgrade
1. on pc go onto touchdev.net
2. click on decrypt firmware
3. go to where it said firmware version and highlight 1.1.1
4. paste onto new internet page and let it download to desktop
5. after download put ipod into recovery mode
6. go back onto itunes and hold shift and click restore
7. find file and double click
8. let it do its thing then done

Recovery mode
1. have ipod touch on
2. hold sleep and home button(dont slide to turn off)
3. hold both until u see the apple and let go of the sleep button but hold home button
then you’ll see it wants u to hook up into ur computer

for a mac shift is option

yea p-oed..how did you get it to work..its not working for me either…after it is extracting..it says error….help please?

  8. Bluem000n, November 25, 2007:

Having looked at lots of sites containing more or less the same instructions for downgrading from 1.1.2, I (like many others) cannot successfully complete the procedure. Since it works for some but not for others, there must be something different in the software / hardware combination – eg. I have UK ipod touch, and am running iTunes 7.5 on a mac. Could those who have been successful in this procedure please also confirm details of their own setup, for comparison purposes? Cheers.

  9. tai, November 25, 2007:

well wen i downgraded i didnt extract cuz i it was already done

  10. raine1x, November 26, 2007:

what do you mean tai…you didnt extract…after you shift and click restore….you choose your file..which is the 1.1.1 file i downloaded….when you choose that..it extracts and after it is done…it says error…please share your experience with us if you have figured out this problem…

  11. tai, November 26, 2007:

all i did was download the 1.1.1 from the link on touchdev here it is http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw
then held shift and click restore and let it do its thing but wen i did this i made sure i had no back up for it i jus click new ipod cuz i forgot to mention dont use backup click new ipod

  12. raine1x, November 26, 2007:

umm..im not sure what your talking about…what do you mean no backup…it was just shift and restore…i dont get your backup,….and where do i click for new ipod??

  13. tai, November 26, 2007:

  14. Van Helsing, November 27, 2007:

Yep, I have iTunes 7.5 and an iPod Touch running 1.1.2 firmware in the UK.

When trying to downgrade I get the following error:

“The iPod “iPod” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1).”

    Wow.

  15. lol, November 29, 2007:

lol all you do is search the error on google and then you can fix it. apple support forums can also help. any questions? good ok goodbye

  16. Grace, December 2, 2007:

Help!!! I’m running this on a MacBook, and I have iTunes 7.5. I have downloaded the firmware 1.1.1 but as I try restoring it, it works but it goes to 1.1.2 immediately so I can’t go to 1.1.1…How do you get it to work, like as in 1.1.1 firmware?

  17. Kevin, December 3, 2007:

    It works!!!

  18. Pat, December 3, 2007:

i have the folder but its just a bunch of files and i get errors for each disk image i try (there are 3) help me!

  19. tomo, December 3, 2007:

chances are you guys were trying to downgrade with
    iphone firmware…

  20. steve, December 4, 2007:

    guys, way to complicated !

    1. Dont place your ipod in recover mode.
    2. Just connect to your mac with USB (this will open itunes)
    3. On the summary page you have two buttons one that will check for updates
    4. hold the “OPTION” key and press check for updates
    5. Now you are in the locater just highlight the 1.1.1 update on your desktop
    6. Let nature take its course, you are done, now you are 1.1.1 and ready
    to unlock it.

  21. steve, December 4, 2007:

OH yeah guys, dont go through all the crap to install all the iphone
    applications on your ipod touch.

Once your touch is jailbreaked open your installer.
    2. then open “sources” on lower right corner.
    3. tap edit
    4. tap add (on other side of edit)
    5. add this url http://repo.us.to (then tap “ok”
    6. tap “done”
    7. tap “install” (icon second from the left on bottom, near home button)
    8. scroll down and olne and behold there they all are iphone 1.1.1 apps as
    well as iphone 1.2.1 apps.

Download away, very easy, one stop and you are done.

    Enjoy!

  22. steve, December 4, 2007:

To unlock your IPOD touch dont do the downloads on your computer!
just open your safari on your ipod and enter the url jailbreakme.com
    2. select download “appsnap” about five seconds later you are open and
you now have the installer to download.

    Enjoy!

The Ipod Touch is amazing unlocked you will love it!

  23. Jordan, December 4, 2007:

I would assume that I am doing something wrong given that “some” people are having success but I am amazed how frustrating this process has become. Its quite annoying how unspecific almost every tutorial for downgrading is. Steve’s directions sound specific but its not that easy. The downoaded file is unzipped and therefore not just a simple one-click and “let nature take its course”.

  24. Jordan, December 4, 2007:

Also, when giving directions, is it so hard for someone to mention if they are providing them for a Mac or PC? I’m speaking in general (not calling this board out) and venting here but why do 90% of the tutorials lack this basic info? I’m not claiming to have much in the way of hacking skills but for “intelligent people” some of them are idiots when it comes to common sense.

  25. Jordan, December 4, 2007:

There must have been something wrong with the 1.1.1 file I was trying to restore. I downloaded it from another location and everything seems to be working fine. Now my previous comments become just a rant… But I still mean most of it.

  26. Steve, December 4, 2007:

I am glad you have it broken dude.

Did you get the applications and the jailbreak without any problems?

If anyone has a problem I do have a public email at steveanderson@live.ca
(I know Mac, I am still hoping to forget everything I know about windows)

  27. Dani, December 5, 2007:

hey jordan you are right, I’ve been in more than 5 different sites and I’m unable to figure out how to downgrade to 1.1.1 because for mistake I downloaded the 1.1.2 this is very frustrating. Can someone help me to downgrade my ipod to 1.1.1 , I have a mac and I’ve already download the firmware but I need more specific directions because as jordan said is not like that easy, please someone help!!

  28. aznboi101, December 5, 2007:

hey wats up im tai i posted the stuff with the ipod stuff as aznboi101 aite i think on a mac u use option as shift

  29. Dani, December 5, 2007:

thanks anyway, but really i don’t know how but I made it after being like 4 hours here i just made it. But it was strange because I downloaded the zip folder from the link that was posted here in the forum and in my desktop appeared a folder with more folders on it useless, but also another icon that looked like an incomplete download in the macs and i just click it and I saw the zip folder and changed it to .ipsw then I put my ipod on recover mode or how is said and just option restore and clicked the icon that looked like an incomplete folder then the zip that i changed to .ipsw and click it and … that was…SUCCESFUL!

  30. Steve, December 5, 2007:

    Hey Guys,

It seems like some people are having a bit of a problem getting valid firmware
for the IPOD, so I thought matbe I could make it easier.

I think Jordan makes a very valid point, with which OS we are talking about, so
I just want to make it clear THIS IS FOR MAC OS X.

    1. Copy and paste this link in firefox or what ever browser you use.
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw

    2. If you copy and pasted this link it will have brought up the 1.1.1 binary file that you need to change the firmware. Just let it save to the desktop.

Then follow post 20 -22- 21 in that order and you are done.

The firmware is just over 150 megs so it make take a while to download.

I hope this helps some of you guys maybe not so familiar with MAC,

Once you go MAC, you never go back!

  31. Steve, December 5, 2007:

I checked the link in post 30 and it works really good.

You dont have to copy and paste it just click on it.

    Hope it helps!

  32. Gmaster, December 5, 2007:

Check out the guide at http://www.g3fusion.com for how to jailbreak your ipod touch with more detailed steps.

  33. tai, December 6, 2007:

be careful wen u jailbreak 1.1.2 cuz i think u got to use WinSCP or Cuteftp

  34. Jordan, December 7, 2007:

I will say that once completed, it is so worth it. Its also amazing how easy it is to add apps once you have it broken. Sometimes I like to just look at the homescreen and all the new icons on it. Yeah I know, lame.

You’re right Steve, Id like to forget about Windows too. Unfortunately I get reminded sometimes.

Glad you got it figured about Dani. Was it worth it? Hope so.

  35. Alex, December 7, 2007:

  37. Margaret, December 7, 2007:

Sorry everyone, I am a silver surfer, bought a an ipod touch, want to be able to play games etc on it, so found this site by googling. I am in the UK, have a Windows XP. Already have an Ipod Nano, and an extensive library. Would someone kindly talk me through the process of enabling me to have games etc on my new Ipod touch…..(holds breath)

    Thank you

  38. Rob, December 7, 2007:

If you are getting error 5 – make sure you the firmware file says it’s specifically for the ipod or iphone respectively. I accidentally downloaded iphone 1.1.1 and i have ipod and got that error when restoring in itunes. After downloading the correct ipod file – restore worked fine

  39. Rob, December 7, 2007:

    Margaret,
Games will most likely be released for ipod touch officially by Apple in February 2008. Until then the only option is jailbreak the ipod and install the games that the community has created. Doing a google search of ‘jailbreak ipod touch’ should get you various tutorials on how to do this.

  40. Margaret, December 7, 2007:

Thank you so much, have found an Idiots Guide!!
Will have a go tomorrow, will let you know how it goes.

  41. Paul, December 8, 2007:

My Mac downloaded the 1.1.1 downgrader and unzipped it into a folder with three dmg files and a few others, not the .ipsw file with the lego icon. I couldn’t get it to install in iTunes. To get around this I used the command for a Terminal download at:
    http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Decrypt_Firmware#Acquiring_the_Firmware

Remember to replace the http in the command with the address for the 1.1.1 file. I only needed to do the first command line listed. My Mac unzipped the file itself. It worked great. It saved the single file in my home user folder. The rest of the jailbreak was easy following post 21 above. Thanks!

  42. pimp, December 9, 2007:

you f***ed up my Ipod. I put it in restore mode and shift click restore but is says error and won’t even restore with out the 1.1.1 update either

  43. tai, December 9, 2007:

ayy calm down jus do the fatal error fix

  44. arturpokusin, December 10, 2007:

hey guys. I tried for a loooong time restoring my ipod touch 16 gig to the 1.1.1 firmware. The biggest problem that i have seen in these posts is that you guys are either getting the iphone 1.1.1 firmware, [Error: iPod could not restore. (5)] or just invalid firmware. [Error...(1)] Just download the firmware from post 30. I’ve been trying for a really long time. Now, i found the link to the original firmware, and it worked like a charm.

  45. Daniel Chaplin, December 10, 2007:

This Works..Downgraded From 1.1.2 To 1.1.1 In Seconds Thanks Very Much I can Now Downlaod Jail Brake Me And Then Upgrade Ipod Touch To 1.1.2 Again And Upgrade Jail break Me To 1.1.2

i used it on a pc and its fine

  48. brian, December 11, 2007:

Ok, i’m on a mac and i keep getting errors 5 or 1… post 44 says something about the “original” firmware.. where might that be? has another mac user had any luck with this method yet?

  49. Joe, December 11, 2007:

This doesnt work for me, i dont get the error messages, but it downgrades it all the way to version 1.1.0 and then i can only upgrade it back to 1.1.2. Anybody know what i should do?

  50. OneDaysPay, December 11, 2007:

Will Downgrading make me lose my current music/movies on the ipod?
    thx

  54. Steve, December 12, 2007:

The correct FIRMWARE is linked in post 30, just click on it.

  55. Alex, December 13, 2007:

    illy:

yes it will but an ipod touch being jailbroken is way better then an ipod touch not being jailbroken it well worth it and besides you can just put the music and movies back on there

  56. tai, December 13, 2007:

ayy i jus put a link to download 1.1.1 firmware

  57. gherman, December 15, 2007:

hey it worked i jail breaked it but can you put lime wire on it or get free songs movies ect?

  58. Some Guy, December 15, 2007:

    Let me just say this…

Yes, I understand the shortcuts and lower-case abbreviations and such which make typing faster and easier. I’ve been online long enough. I know the conventions and I know my way around. But a lot of the redundant questions on this thread could be avoided if some of you just take the time to type your instructions out clearly without all the cuz, u, um, and other gibberish pseudo-l33t laziness.

Make an effort or don’t bother at all. There are a lot of videos on YouTube about this downgrade, but most of the people who posted them are so poorly spoken and the camera doesn’t even focus on the screen long enough to make clear the information, that they’re essentially worthless.

Post the info. Make sure it’s right. Extend a little effort so your information is clean and understandable.

The other thing is that for a lot of people who read these threads English is their second language and the laziness of some native English speakers (mostly American) just makes the information unintelligible to just about everyone.

  59. tai, December 17, 2007:

ayy yo number 58 i dont care how ppl type cuz u gettin watchu want arent chu

  60. Nick, December 17, 2007:

ok so i tryed this 3 time over 3 days, and spent a total of 3 or 4 hours messing around with it, turns out i just didnt click save to disk, but it does work

  61. Damouse, December 20, 2007:

    @ Some Guy

What a cleverly hidden attack against americans! Those who post any help whatsoever are doing so of their own will and are (for the most part) only trying to help; if you cant understand them then we all sincerly apologize…. They do not, under any circumstance, need to “rise to your level,” instead you should most likely try your best to understand them at however they choose to contribute and are not here for your review.

As a small point, l33t and abreviations, specifically ancronyms, are not the same thing at all. Ancronyms are widely accepted and used on the internet and in the real world, if you have some sort of problem with ancronyms then its way, way beyond the scope of jsut having issues with “stupid americains.” As for l33t gibberish, no one here has posted in any semblance of l33t and i dont think theyre going to start. L33t is not meant for clairity and it has no influence on ancronyms.

Keep it to yourself. We just dont give a damn.

  62. John, December 21, 2007:

I must be an idiot! i have downloaded the version 1.1.1. as instructed. It is a folder on my desktop. However, when I try to restore to it, I just keep clicking on “open” from the restore dialogue, but I never find a file inside the folder that is a restorable file. I have clicked on every file in the folder and sub folders, and I just get an error message. What am I doing wrong. There must be a step missing here for Mac morons! BTW, I don’t have a “Option” key on my new wireless Apple. I have an “Alt” key, which is what I am using when I try to restore, and it allows me to choose a file.

  63. IronS, December 21, 2007:

    To John:

The problem is that you decompressed the files. I assume that you are using a mac. If you follow my instructions, you will be able to fix it:

a: Go to folder where your decompressed files are
b: Select all the files (5 files and a folder)
c: Right click on anyone of these files
d: From the menu click on the “Create archive for 6 elements”
e: Wait a while for the archive to be created. You will see a new file appeared with the name “archive.zip” inside the folder with the other 6 files.
    f: Rename the “archive.zip” to “Restore.ipsw.zip” (optional)
g: Open the new file (The Restore.ipsw.zip) from inside iTunes, by clicking on the update button on the summary tab, and pressing the options key.

    Have fun!! :)

  64. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

what does that mean put ipod in *recovery* mode?

  65. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

    whaaaaaaaaaats recoverrrrrrrrrrrrry moooooooooode???

  66. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

ok srry i figured out the recovery thingy…but what do u mean u’ll see it wants u to hook up into ur computer…it just stays on the apple thing…

  67. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

wer is restore button on itunes???

  68. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

    better instructions:
    go here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw

  69. jadeee, December 22, 2007:

IPOD COULD NOT CONNECT TO ITUNES CUZ A FRIKKIN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURED!???!?!!??!?!??!??!
    HOW DO U FIX IT????????

  70. GoodimGod, December 22, 2007:

Just downgraded to 1.1.1 and now i cant connect to the internet with my ipodtouch any more. youtube and safari both give me an ‘cant connect to server’ error.

I am very worried did i just F up my new ipod

  71. GoodimGod, December 22, 2007:

ps i am connect to the wireless and itunes says ive got version 1.1.1.

  72. GoodimGod, December 22, 2007:

just upgraded back to version 1.1.2 and the internet fucntions work fine again. Has apple put a stop to downgrading and using internet ?

  73. Ray, December 23, 2007:

what does it mean when it says “paste onto new internet page and let it download to desktop”
do i copy paste link or do i just click it and dl on desktop

  74. GoodimGod, December 23, 2007:

Dont waste your time m8 it doesnt work. Once u downgrade to version 1.1.1 The ipod wont let you connect to the internet any more. so no way of installing jailbreaker. And even if u could via HD and wire it is pointless as your internet wont work any more.

  75. bbytee, December 23, 2007:

ok so I’ve went onto jailbreaker and all isaw was a little box in the corner and when I eaeged it it was a box with a questionark on it btw I’m doing this post right now on my itouch I don’t get it nothin loads help please

  77. Tobie, December 24, 2007:

hey i downloaded the link from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3932.20070927.p23dD/iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw,
i used the shift click on update then it said error, and i tried unzipping the file and choosing different files it has about 4 different errors. and now it just shows the connect to i tunes screen and it won’t work,
please help me what do i do.

  78. Adgum, December 24, 2007:

Worked Great. Thanks a heap ^_^

  79. hilla, December 24, 2007:

Okay, worked for me perfectly. First I downgraded to version 1.1. and didn’t synchronize with iTunes before jailbreaking so that the iTunes version wouldn’t disturb (if it even does that – I dunno). Everything went really smooth.

  80. hilla, December 24, 2007:

oh yeah – and if you’re on mac the notion that shift is option is pretty valuable to keep in mind.

  81. caa1106, December 24, 2007:

I have already successfully downgraded my itouch to 1.1.1. My problem now is, when I go to jailbreak.com and click the “install appsnap”, the itouch goes blank and goes to the main menu of the desktop. I’ve waited for more than 10 mins and nothing that is expected to happen, happens (safari crashes, installer icon appearing on itouch etc). I am using Mac. What should i do?

  82. Mate, December 24, 2007:

This procedure works just fine. I recommend it.

  83. Tobie, December 24, 2007:

how do you do the fatal fix error and how do you pull it out of recovery mode

  84. Dan, December 25, 2007:

Ok i have about had it. Im on PC (yeah I know) I have been surfing and surfing for a way for me to jailbreak my itouch so i can put apps on this thing. This is the whole reason I bought this in the first place. If i knew ahead of time it was this hard(pain in the ass) to jailbreak my itouch i would of bought something else. to fix the fatal error jus look through the stuff i posted as aznboiva

  86. James, December 26, 2007:

Thanks for all the help! Its starting to work just how i want it to!
If you are still stuck – stop, breathe and give your computer time to download what it needs to! This may take a while but is worth it!
If you go to post 30 follow the steps suggested and then go to: http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Jailbreak_1.1.2 if you want to get version 1.1.2 then its back to how you had it before just open/free to add and change whatever you want – well within reason!
    Enjoy :)

  106. aznboi101, December 29, 2007:

thanxs for da backup keepin checkin out the site im figuring out more stuff about the touch

  107. Jimmy, December 30, 2007:

Ok, on PC this could not be simpler.
I just downgraded, I was very reluctant seeing all the negative feedback in the comments, but it worked my first time.

Download the appropriate firmware, the link provided worked for me.
Make sure it shows up as one lego-block looking file on your desktop (I guess macs are having issues because it wants to auto-extract?)
Don’t bother putting your ipod in recovery, trust me.
Just plug the ipod touch in and on the screen that gives you the option of either updating or restoring (for PC users!) hold shift and click UPDATE. It will ask you what file you want to update to so choose the one you just downloaded…

Will take a couple minutes, but afterwards the ipod will restart and ask you to update back to 1.1.2… say no… obviously… you just did all that work! Done. I haven’t done the jailbrakeme yet though so I have no help with that.

  108. Josh, December 30, 2007:

I have a PC and when I got my iPod it was already on version 1.1.2. Can anyone give me a sure way to do this without messing up my iPod?

  109. Jimmy, December 31, 2007:

follow my steps in 107 to bring it to version 1.1.1
    basically to reiterate:
    Download the appropriate firmware file
Plug in your ipod and open itunes (you don’t have to put it in recovery mode)
On the screen that shows the status of your ipod, hold shift and click update
Select the firmware file you just downloaded in the menu that appears
It will then “update” the firmware to the 1.1.1 (might take a bit)

    There done, it’s in 1.1.1

    Now for the app thinger
just goto jailbreakme.com on your ipod’s browser
    hit download
Once you hit it, you will be returned to this home screen
The first time I did it, I didn’t get anything
I tried again and a download screen came up on the home screen after about thirty seconds.
Once it’s done… get to it, it’s easy from there to add stuff

  110. Robyn, December 31, 2007:

Okay I downloaded the firmware to my PC, and I’ve gotten my iPod and iTunes open, but when I try to downgrade to 1.1.1 it says that error -18 occurred. I tried Googling it and nothing came up. Please help?

  111. John, January 1, 2008:

Is 1.12 in the title a typo? My iTouch says 1.1.2. Also, does it still work the same?

  112. Xaviern, January 3, 2008:

It would be better if they make a jailbreak for 1.1.2 iPods
I don’t want to go through all that

I had no trouble at all downgrading to version 1.1.1, however I can not connect to the internet no matter what I do. I have tried all the tricks: forgetting the network and rejoining, resetting all network settings, even manually entering the IP, SM, router, and DNS. AND NOTHING WORKS!!!!! After about an hour of tring to get the internet working, I updated to version 1.1.2 and the internet worked just fine once again. Now I have again downgraded to version 1.1.1 and have the exact same problem! How am I even going to get my iPod jailbroken if I can’t connect to the internet from 1.1.1? Is there any way possible to install Jailbreak straight from version 1.1.2? Please let me know, I really want to get this hack finished! (And I am tired of losing all the music and such from my iPod evey time I try the hack! I have to use this thing in between times, you know!

There is one thing, more than one person pointed out: http://www.touchdev.net is NOT working, i repeat, it is NOT working…….. any solutions??? and one more questions, ppl keep refering to “the link”, and on another post, sumbody said that that link was for mac, then other posts (who said they were PC…) said it worked just fine………… so does the link work for both PC and MAC………………..???? just as a clarification…..

  141. ZeD, January 31, 2008:

anyways, just wanted to say: THE KEY TO ALL THIS BULLSHIT AND DOUBTS IS IN THE LINK IN POST NUMBER 30…… like tai said, it works….. i downloaded it to the desktop, then i opened itunes, pressed shift, then restore, navigated to the downloaded ITEM, (or watever u call it, because there is NO file, it is just one thingy), double clicked on it, and it was done….. itunes was like: extracting software and the works, and thats it…… don’t friggin panic…… just follow the simple instructions…… any comments?? send em’ to zed_o07@hotmail.com cuz i won’t be back, i’m done here, THANX aznboiva and tai

Details to follow, but don’t expect jailbreak or the unactivated Safari workaround hack to still be functional, ok? (… aaaand we’re watching our download speed drop as our readers are grabbing the file. Rockin’.) Update: TIFF jailbreak exploit is dead. Sorry peoplehttp://www.engadget.com/2007/11/08/apple-posts-firmware-v1-1-2-goodbye-jailbreak/2
