This is a post rAwks and I jointly wrote about common questions we see. These questions are aimed for owners of a jailbroken 1.1.4 iPod Touch.

First, a foreword from rAwks:

Lots of people have been asking us questions about problems they have faced with jailbreaking their device. I understand…before I was a writer for this site, I would panic to Lone Stag for help. We don’t mind helping other’s out with problems, but sometimes it gets TOO repetitive. I know it’s a hassle to read through 100+ comments to find the answer that you’re looking for. So…this post will hopefully break it down for you to find your answer easier. Here goes:

BSD ROOT ERROR

Lots of people have faced this error while jailbreaking their device and it really scares the crap out of you. You panic because you see all this gibberish on your device and it just doesn’t stop. When you restart it and turn it back on, the same white text shows up. The way to fix it is by doing a hard reset and restore to 1.1.4 on iTunes. To do to a hard reset you would hold the home button and the wake/sleep button down until it shuts off. Keep holding it down even through start up (when the Apple logo appears). Finally let go when the “connect to iTunes” screen shows up. From there, restore to 1.1.4 and try again!

MAIL APP CRASHING

Some people faced their Mail app crashing when clicked on. The way to fix this is by adding a source into Installer. Add this souce: http://installer.iClarified.com

Then install “SyncFix” in the iClarified folder. Once you install it, restart your iPod and connect to iTunes. This should stop it from crashing.

KEYBOARD FREEZE

I faced the keyboard freezing when trying to add a source into Installer. I thought just a simple restart would fix the solution. When I went back, the keyboard froze again. The way to fix this is by going into Contacts and click the + to add a new contact. Click on one of the boxes (I chose the “First Last” box) and just type anything in for about 10 seconds. Once you’re down typing away, click on cancel. Then click cancel again and just click on the home button. When you go into Installer and add a source, it should fix the freezing keyboard situation.

APPLICATION SPACE

Lots of people think that by installing applications you’re going to use up the GB you have for music, photos, etc. If you have a 16 GB iPod Touch, all that space is ONLY for music, photos, etc. When you install apps, they take up space somewhere else. When you jailbreak your iPod, immediately install “Bosstools.” This app will free up more space for more apps. If you don’t install this and lose space, sometimes things go wrong (Ex. Installer crashing). When you have Bosstools on your home screen, click on it and then click on “Free Disk Space.” When you get to the next screen, click on “Relocate Fonts.” A pop up will show up making sure you want to do it…just click “Do it!” Once down, your disk space will boost up.

SUMMERBOARD

When you install SummerBoard onto your iPod, make sure to make it active. Lots of people forget to do this. If you don’t make it active, when you click on the theme you want…nothing happens! To make SummerBoard active, all you have to do is restart your iPod. Once it’s back on, click on SMBPrefs and on the very bottom it should say “Active.”

CUSTOMIZE

It doesn’t work for 1.1.4 yet, but if you really want it…there’s a way around it. First you have to add 2 sources into installer:

- repo.ispazio.net

- ipodtouched.net/repo.xml

When those get added, go to the install tab and under Tweaks (1.1.4) install the “1.1.4 Compatibility Patch.” This allows you to install apps that work for 1.1.3. Once you install this, click on the install tab and find the folder that says “iPod Touched.” Inside you will find “Modded Customize” and install that. When you’re done, go to the uninstall tab and uninstall the “1.1.4 Compatibility Patch.” Make sure that every time you use this patch, you uninstall it. When you want to use it again, install the patch and install whatever you want…then make sure to uninstall it.

ERROR PACKAGE FAILED

The unwelcome “Error Package Failed” pop up appears when you try to install an app in Installer. To fix this problem, make sure in Installer that there is nothing in your queue. If you cleared it and you install again and nothing happens, clear the queue again and restart your iPod. You shouldn’t get that error again.

SPRINGBOARD/SUMMERBOARD NOT COMPLETING REFRESH

If you exit installer and your restart is just hanging longer than usual, just wait a little longer. If after one minute it is still hanging, hold home and power until your iPod turns off. Turn it back on and it should be working.

APP FREEZES

App freezes are common, especially if they are still in the beta stages. If an app freezes, press home and get back to your home screen. If clicking home doesn’t work, hold power and home until it turns off. Turn it back on and try the app again.

iChat NOT WORKING

iChat might not log you in when you clearly entered your correct email address and password. If you can’t log in, try this. Click your name. When is trying to connect, click cancel. Then click your name again. Keep clicking it until it logs you in on the connecting screen.

THE ULTIMATE SOLUTIONS

If something is wrong and the above solutions don’t work, manually turn off your iPod by holding power and home until your iPod turns off. The ultimate solution to any problem is to do a hard restore. This is if your iPod is completely not working. To do this, hold power and the home button. Keep holding, even when it turns off. Let go when you see the connect to iTunes logo appear, and restore your iPod in iTunes.

Just a little comment about Summerboard, based on my own experience. It didn’t work on my 1.1.4 although I made it active. It only managed to work after i chmod +x and chmod +s it in WinSCP.

I just thought that if anyone else had a problem even after making it active, you can add those two commands to the post. =)

You can’t COMPLETELY screw up your iPod…unless you drop it in water or something. If you get into things that you can’t figure out and a buncha errors show up, just do a hard reset. The hard reset works all the time. Hope all goes well!

And even if the hard reset doesn’t do it for you, put it into recovery mode, and then boot it back up with iPhuc.

Or just restore it. =) Plenty of alternatives.

add this source: http://www.clubifone.com/repo.xml and download the package called: customize 1.1.4 inside the folder called clubifone-fix. its a modifided version that works perfectly made by a spanish guy. dont worry everything is in english

If it just keeps crashing, you have to go on Installer and get the SUID Lib Fix, which should be located in the “Tweaks (1.1.4)” folder. Also, turn on and off your iPod. This should fix your problem. Hope all goes well!

Yeah. Download iLiberty+, rejailbreak with the option ‘fix you tube error’

Don’t know if ZiPhone has such a button.

@ computerlabkid

Let it crash a few times (maximum about 5 times). It crashes because it is creating the necessary folders on the ipod for the app to run. Its just something within the app that does not let it create folders without crashing.

However, if the app continues to crash after about 3 -5 times, then do what rawks said about the suid fix. =)

If you’re using Customize, you would have to download the theme you want. Then on the bottom of that theme you downloaded, you just click “apply theme to device.” That should do the trick! Hope all goes well!

Yeah, you go to Installer and go to Themes (Customize) and download the themes. If you have done the symlinking right, they will show up in the proper folders in Customize.

Maybe you should add in the ‘keyboard freeze’ section here that if you went into installer before going into contacts, you’ll most probably have to rejailbreak and redo the typing nonsense thing.

Because most of the time, once you’ve gone into installer (before the 10 secs typing) there is might be little chance that going into contacts will work.

You need to rejailbreak, unfortunately. Its the only way to fix the freezing keyboard. Rejailbreak and follow the instructions on this page.

At newtouchowner:

no, you dont have to uninstall summerboard. But customize at the moment doesn’t have the ability to change themes unless you have 2.0.

Every time I try to click on the “Install” button, my iPod freezes. I use the reset buttons (Home+Top Button) but as soon as I turn it back on and try to click on the Install button again, it freezes. Could this possibly be because I bought my iPod back in November?

Obviously, the iliberty+ jailbreak for 1.1.4. needs some serious work. I also am experiencing the freezing problems. I’m reading countless ‘fixes’ such as the contact fix, the boss tools fix, etc, but why doesn’t someone program a jailbreak that takes care of all that in the first place? I just wasted 3 hours installing sources and apps and now nothing works and I have to restore it back to normal. I should have listened to the Apple store guy and left it alone!

for those who cannot reboot or charge there ipod:
1: click start then search
2: type in “Apple Mobile Device
3: click on “Apple Mobile Device Support (3rd one down on list 12,000kb)
4: click on Repair file
5: restart itunes
your ipod should now appear in itunes
if after you restore your ipod itunes says (insert sim in your iphone) ignore this an just restart itunes your ipod should be fully restored

Hey Guys, tried restarting but nothing will work. i can switch my itouch off holding the power and home button. but when i start it. a lot of writeing scrools down after the apple sign goes away like a script from dos .. then stops and gives me an error message. i dont know what to do. because when i connect it to the usb it does not even turn up on itunes anymore. i have no clue what to do… please help me.

Ok, look. I already restored the iPod Touch. But then I had to do the hard reset. After that, it showed up with “iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. So I click restore, and it says preparing to restore iPod. But then it says “The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured.(1604)”. I don’t know what to do, please help!

The same thing happened to me four months ago. Make sure that when you are resetting it, that you are holding down both the power and the home button at the same time until the image of the iTunes logo and the dock connector shows up. Then restore it on iTunes, it may not show up on iTunes, so you may have to click on the windows start button then search. Search for “Apple Mobile Device”. Then it should show up in iTunes, I’m not sure though. Haven’t tried it yet.

I loaded ZiPhone onto my 32gb iPod Touch. The sleep/wake button no longer works, not even if i restore it (it only stopped working after i jailbroke it). at the moment it is jailbroken, however, the Touch only turns on all the way when plugged in. Otherwise it shows the apple logo for a couple seconds and turns off. When i try to reset it, it doesn’t work. it just turns off.

I just installed ziphone… installed only a bit applications, last one caught my attention is the one with the calender edit (it says ” warning: this will change the applications to default setting”…something like that )

and I have a few other things on my home ….but when I quit the place and go to home, it shows the “setting language” and froze completely like that………. can’t turn it off or anything until the battery runs out. I rechared it a bit and restart again, little apple white logo starting pic showed up, the little loading circle showed up and froze there again……………………………..once again wait for battery runs out

what should I do now? TT-TT, I never really wanted to jailhack it but others promote me to do it….T=T

SO on the BSD root error. do u hold the home and sleep button till it turns on agian or do start it up regular??? I had this problem and im not to sure about that because i would turn my on with the ipod connected to the comp. and the itunes plug in logo would not show up and just keep saying the BSD root error.

My daughter thinking she was doing something nice for me bought a cd and put it on itunes. she was going to sync my ipod and when it told her to update it to 1.1.4 she did. now i have lost everything on my ipod and my computer and itunes does not recognize my ipod. i have tried the manual restore holeding the home and power button until the apple logog appears and still nothing can you help?

I have a 16 g Touch, when trying to do the jailbreak I got a business call and got side tracked, now my itunes doesnt show my touch whens its connected to my laptop, hence i cant restore it, my ipod shows the apple sign when it first starts then keeps reading BSD root: md0, major2, minor0, over and over again. Tap power and home together. The screen goes black and when the apple logo apears leave only the power button
keep holding the home button until the iTunes message for connection apears.Run the itunes make the restore and so on…

I tried top hack my ipod touch using the ziphone.org I was in the process of hacking and it was taking a long time. There was a warning that said if it takes longer than 3 minutes please dissconnect and try again. I tried again and my ipod did not show up on itunes. IU tried resetiing it using both buttons and it just turns off anf turns on showing screen in white letters.

I reaaly need some help to solve this. All i want is my regular itouch back no hacks.

When you do the hard reset make sure to hold down all buttons til it shuts off. Keep holding them down while it starts up again (should have the Apple logo). Keep holding until you get the “connect to itunes” screen…then you can restart and restore. Hope all goes well!

I’ve read through most of the comments (I got to about 300) I know one of the answers to my question is there, but I think my eyes will burn if I have to look through that many again, so I apologize for the repeat question and please help me out.

I have the 8GB iPod touch, and I just jailbroke it last night, and now:
Every app won’t return when I press the home button.
The apps freeze as soon as the keyboard appears (I can’t type in the Contacts app)
And there is an Error 1602 every time I try to restore.

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

I have the ipod touch 8GB and I installed the Ziphone and while something was downloading I unplugged it. A screen with the top of the charger popped up and an arrow pointing to the itunes symbol. It will not go any farther then that. So in other words it is frozen at that screen. It WILL turn on and off but when I turn it back on and after the apple symbol dissappears the screen that it freezes at comes up. I was wondering if my itouch is permanetly frozen and I have to exchange it and get a new one or if I have to take it onto and apple store or if you could help me fix it. I would rather have help from you because I am 14 and if my parents have to take me to get ANOTHER itouch becuse I wrecked this one I will be in trouble. PLEASE HELP!!!

my ipod keeps freezing nomatter what i do, i tried restoring it like 5 times!

Ziphone is one of the few methods of jailbreaking your device. It could either be for ipod touch or iphones. The percentage is 50/50 cause some people get problems and some people don’t. If you haven’t done anything yet, I recommend using WinPwn.

Nice name…haha. Anyways…you would have to do a hard reset and re-do it. Some people that used certain jailbreaks come across this problem. Try using WinPwn, which is supposedly said to fix the bugs that Ziphone or iLiberty do.

Ok i need help bad or im in alot of trouble ok so the Bsd Root Error thing happened and i held down the home button and the power button and it turned off i didn’t let go of either till the apple sign cam up then i let go of the power button and kept holding the home button but the white text gibberish cam up again, so i redo it. For those having the keyboard freeze problem, i suggest doing a hard restore, then using winpwn following the directions on this site: http://www.ipodtouchhacks.com/uncategorized/detailed-instructions-on-how-to-use-winpwn/ . worked like a charm for me. now i can live happy again. you may need to download the .net framwork 2,0 in order for winpwn to work tho.

This is a problem I don’t really care about I just want to know if it can be fixed. So I was using custom, which is a bad program, and I started to use summerboard instead. So I uninstalled custom and then I noticed the lock screen wallpaper is still the same as before. So I tryed to change it useing setting but nothing happens. i didnt restore ipod before using ziphone and while it was loading ziphone, itunes had a screen that said ipod is in recovery. i clicked ok then exited itunes. then my ipod froze. after 3 minutes i cancelled ziphone and disconnected ipod. now its frozen. it wont do anything and computer doesnt detect?!?!?!?!?

Ok i have an IPOD Touch 32GB which was running on v1.1.4 jailbroken. However, i used the WinPWN utility and accidentally ran the IPhone version of the V1.1.4 firmware. Currently i am encountering the screen being constantly black and turns white when in dfu mode but only for about 7 secs.
Attempts to restore the via ITunes (latest version 7.7.1) with the IPOD touch firmware version 1.1.4 and 2.0.0 is just futile since i am encountering Unknown error (5). My IPOD is presently identified as an Iphone on ITUNES. I need help! Please let me know.

After updating my ipod touch to firmware 2.0 from ipod touch firmware 1.1.4 there seems to be a straight line about a half a centimeter thick going down the right side of my ipod where the touch pad or whatever its called will not work. this makes it difficult to scroll my sidebar over to even get my ipod on the home screen, i cant play games on it cuz the touch pad does not work correctly and i also cant use the keyboard on my ipod becase some of the letters will not get pressed due to this sensor issue. i downgraded my ipod back to firmware 1.1.4 hoping that this would solve the problem, it didnt, i still have an ipod touch that does not fully work on the touch part of it and ive run out of ideas, i need help. please help me.

hi guys can anyone help me please. im jailbreaking my ipod touch 16gb all goes well, im putting some apps on it and its running all smooth, when i unplug it from the laptop and switch it off and then switch it back on it goes all wron again, all the white txt scrolls through again and at the end it says:

and it doesnt do anything after that.

I bought a new 8gb touch, jail broken it with firmware 1.14, about 3 mnths ago.

the problem: battery just dies after about an ONE HOUR of playing mp3’s only

I normally charge it for about 3-4 hours. i have tried charging on the computer and the wall jack. same thing happens: battery dies in an hour

I brought it to genius bar and they said the battery was fine and its probably the added games but i uninstalled just about everything, even the sources. And still the battery dies in an hour with just playing mp3’s

should I just format and install firmware 1.15?

please, anybody, give me some advice on how I can fix this problem..

Hey everyone, trying to install .IPA ’s . My problem is i can not find the ‘mobileinstallation.framework’ or whatever the file is inside of the file ‘root/system/library/privateframeworks’ . I am using winscp and can only see about 5 folders, none of which are the above folder needed to modify file inside. If u try to jailbreack i phone or i touch try Qwickpwn.com youll find all u need how to downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2 is better that way try i did that to mine i downgraded in itunes by pressing shift and restore wich youl hold down till restore is done you need to erase iPod1,1_2.2.1_5H11_ and copy the ipod 1,1_2.2_ get it from quickpwn site that should do it

Hey guys what’s up.
I’ve had my ipod touch jailbroken for awhile now. But a couple months ago, I accidentally screwed it up, long story, so I had to click the “restore settings” button on itunes…where it says if you are expierencing problems with your ipod…blah blah blah.
So I clicked that, and my ipod went from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5….?
And now when I try to reinstall some apps, like summerboard for example, it says that I need to have 1.1.1/1.1.3 or higher to download summerboard even thought I have 1.1.5….?
Anybody know what’s up or how to fix this?

Hey, I have no idea what the hell is going on with this thing. I jailbroke my brother’s iPod touch 8g with ZiPhone and it was flawless. So after getting my own 16g, I tried to jailbreak it.
It just keeps saying “BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0″
Holding down the on/off button will not do anything, I am unable to turn off my iPod.
It also won’t show up when connected, through iTunes OR ZiPhone.

Cydia won’t work. I have a touch that is jail broken. I bought it second hand and it was already jailbroken. When I active cydia it loads for a second and then goes back to the ipod menu. 1.with redsn0w it always closes when i click “next” after i choose the .ipsw file for iPod touch 2g 3.0.
2. with pwnage tool it says wrong firmware bundle on expert mode and on simple mode it cant recognize my .ipsw file for iPod touch 2g 3.0.

My wifes ipod touch was shot coming form the factory. It would run for about 2 hours at a time and then turn to a brick. We have a return authorization, but cannot do a hard reset through itunes as the ipod crashed her computer during one of the restores and we are waiting on repair. Is there a way to do a hard reset to wipe out all personal info without connecting to itunes? Will the home & sleep button resotre also wipe out the personal data?
