I have gotten posts on how to jailbreak an iPod Touch on 1.1.3, so for all of you who need this, follow the instructions carefully. It worked for my 16g, but it should be compatible with every iPod Touch. I didn’t write instructions for 1.1.4 because some apps don’t work for it yet and there isn’t a really safe way to jailbreak it that I like. I am assuming that you all need to be told every step so you don’t mess it up. No offense.
1. Restore your iPod Touch to Firmware 1.1.1
- Download the firmware at http://www.applewb.com/2008/03/04/list-of-all-iphone-and-ipod-touch-firmwares-10-102-111-112-113-114/
- Plug in your iPod
- Run iTunes
- When your iPod pops up, hold shift (option key for Mac users) and click restore
- Select the file you just downloaded and wait for your iPod to be restored
- Don’t add music or name your iPod yet.
- Unplug it after it has been restored (wait until you get to the screen that says Set Up Your iPod).
If your iPod had an unknown error when you tried to restore, you have two options.
1) This is a little trick that worked for me. Restore the firmware to 1.1.3 (download it at http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/061-4060.20080115.9Iuh5/iPod1,1_1.1.3_4A93_Restore.ipsw), then add just a few songs to it and sync it. Now try the restore to 1.1.1
2) Put your iPod into DFU mode. This is tricky, but it worked for me once. Go to http://dermapthera.wordpress.com/2008/01/27/how-to-make-your-ipod-touch-in-dfu-mode/
- Once it is in firmware 1.1.1
- On your iPod, go to Settings
- Click General
- Turn Auto-Lock to Never
2. Install AppSnap
- On your iPod, open Safari (it will ask you to choose your WiFi, do it)
- Go to the website www.jailbreakme.com
- Install AppSnapp
- Let it run and it will reset springboard
- Unlock your iPod and see it jailbroken
3. Install BSD Subsystem
- Open Installer. You will get an upgrade pop-up, do it. It will also say donate, but click later unless you really want to do that now
- Once done, go to the Install tab and under All Packages install BSD Subsystem
- Click the home button to refresh your iPod
4. Add Sources
- In Installer, click on the Sources tab
- Click edit, then add the source http://www.ijailbreak.com/repo.plist
- Click the home button
- Turn off your iPod
- Turn it back on
5. Jailbreak it to 1.1.3
- In Installer, go to the Install tab, then go to iJailBreakMobile
- Click iJaliBreakMobile 1.1.1 and install it
- Once installed, click the home button
- Before running this program, make sure you have a lot of charge as it will take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your WiFi Connection
- Click iJailbreak and wait for it to do its thing
- When it is done, it will restart your iPod
- If it doesn’t, and you wait more than five minutes, the hold the power and home buttons until it turns off, then turn it back on
6. Fixing Stuff
- In Installer, go to Install, All Packages, then install BSD Subsystem (I know you already did this, but it was deleted during the upgrade)
- In Installer, go to Install, iJailbreakMobile, then install Remove 1.1.3 Upgrade…
- In Installer, go to Install, iJailbreakMobile, then install iPod touch Software Up… (this will get you the wiggly feature and install the iPod Touch Software Upgrade), click home and click iJailbreak (it will do its thing and then restart your iPod)
- In Installer, go to Install, iJailbreakMobile, then install Fix Mail Passwords
- Add the source http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo
- In Installer, go to Install, All Packages, then install BossTool
- Once installed, click home and let the iPod refresh
- Click BossTools, Free Disk Space, then Relocate Fonts
- You can then uninstall BossTool in Installer in the Uninstall tab
7. Sync with iTunes
- Plug in your iPod and sync with iTunes (you can now add your stuff)
- Everything is now DONE

With a jailbroken 1.1.2, you go to iJailbreakMobile and install 1.1.2 iJailbreak on step 5.2. Follow the rest the same as normal.
I just bought the iPod touch online with the new software so when i downgrade it to 1.1.1 will it remove the software???

Yes, you get all of the apps from the upgrade for FREE. You have to install the fix for mail, but other than that they all work. Plus you get the wiggly feature, which is actually a real convenience.
To ipod touch:
I am pretty sure that downgrading will remove the new software, but in further steps you get them back, so it should all even out.

ohh one more question when i jailbreak it is there an app that can hack other people’s wifi. so i can use the neighbours internet.

Besides that being highly illegal, there is nobody who is going to advertise that. So no. Not that i know of.

during step 5… is there a point of time where the screen just shines? like there is just light and nothing else? cuz after i see the screen that looks lik comman prompt later on the whole touch screen just goes blank..not black but blank with light..is that suppose to happen? its still sitting there lik that and not restarting…i tried turning it off or going to home but it wont let me

Did you install community sources (under install, sources, community sources)? Look under packages once that is installed.

I ordered it off the Apple Store and it’s shipped already, but I live in Japan and it’s going to my parents’ house in the US. I’ll be picking it up in a couple weeks when I go to visit them, and wanted to make sure I could Jailbreak it on day one.
Sorry i cant believe i missed that step..but i got it all under control now…so after im done that and i have uninstalled bosstool. i am now officially done? and can continue to put my music/pictures etc etc?

It is safe to update the installer. That might be the problem. Other things might be that it has not been made for the version 1.1.3, if it is an old game or something just might be wrong with that particular game. I just tried downloading some games on mine (i rejailbroke it today) and it worked fine.

First off, is there anything on your 1.1.3 iPod? This happened to me a lot, and this is how I fixed it. Restore your iPod so that it is a blank 1.1.3. Then add a few songs to it. Thanks, the only problem is, that I can’t connect to my device with ssh and ftp, because it does not recognize my previously used password. IS there a way to reset the root passwd???
Alright, ftp, and ssh works with the default root password alpine, but the terminal.app wants a password from me, where it sais for every passwd that it’s incorrect.

I just upgraded to 1.1.4 onmy 8GB Touch and used Ziphone - and all has worked well. I can do everything. I’d try this before going through all of these steps.
Is this a jailbreak or a soft upgrade? Because I did a soft upgrade before, and it was SO BUGGY that I downgraded to a 1.1.2 JB. Please clarify this. As far as I know, as long as you DON’T have the 1.1.3 on the iPod as you jailbreak, then its a soft upgrade, not a JAILBREAK.

Ziphone only works for 8gb iPods. It has occasionally been reported to work on a 16gb (I tried it and it didn’t work) but it has never worked for a 32gb. So this method is for the other two, but also works for 8gb.

This is a jailbreak. I had the same problem with soft upgrades, but this method works really well and has few if any bugs.
i tried to get the 1.1.1 patch but when i try to open the web url you provided i get a 403 forbidden message that i don’t have access to that webpage.

Thanks for the detailed instuctions, they are the best. They worked perfectly for me. I bought my ipod with 1.1.3 on it so i was having trouble restoring it until i read that u needed to put it in DFU mode, which did the trick.
woa i got a problem. I installed the piano app and then i played around with that for a little bit. I went back to the home screen and then there was that loading circle in the center. Nothing responded so i turned my ipod off. When it turned back on and displayed the apple logo it also displayed the loading circle again and my ipod won’t boot up to the home screen. itunes still regognizes it and i can transfer songs to it, but the home screen still doenst’ load.
when it goes into the installer for the 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 it then says in the text thing, it says

Hey does jailbreaking an ipod just mean that you can add random apps? is it possible to open up an ipod touch’s folders in my computer like you could with all of the previous ipods? umm also is jailbreaking an ipod risky (like could it screw it up), i assume it voids the warranty? thanks a lot

Hold the power button and the home button like you are putting it into DFU mode, except don’t let go of both buttons until you get the connect to itunes symbol. Then you have to restore all over again. I a have no idea why this happened, maybe just a fluke.
To Sam:
You must not have shut down the iPod after you add sources. This happened to me once, and i ssh’d into it to fix the problem. For you, i would do a restore to 1.1.1 and try it again. Things happen.
To noob:
Yes, that is right. It jailbreaks 1.1.1 for you but you have to follow the rest of the directions for 1.1.3. I recommend doing so.
To Touch Me:
Jailbreaking lets you put apps onto your iPod that you would have to wait until June to possibly see (the SDK). Jailbreaking is sorta risky, but there is always a way to fix it, and i can help if anything goes wrong. It does void the warranty, but you can restore it if you dont like it so they will never know. I recommend jailbreaking.

Hello, just got myself a ipod touch and unknowning of jailbreak I updated my ipod to 1.1.4 -_- Do you think they will find a way to jailbreak that version in a near future?
Hey man, followed your instructions and when it has finished Jailbreak to 1.1.3 (Step 5) the ipod shows the connect to itunes screen. If i reset the ipod it still goes back to this screen. I have plugged it into itunes and it says this ipod is in recovery mode.
I’m having another go from the start to see if it works this time. Any ideas why it is doing this or am I doing something wrong.
If you have firmware 1.1.4 but downgrade it to 1.1.3, can you still use this guide to downgrade it to 1.1.1

I think ziphone.org is working on one. This one will work with 1.1.3 if you downgrade yours to it.

I think you are powering off way to soon. Wait until the screen doesnt change for 10 minutes and then turn it off. When you turn it off, let go of both buttons when it turns off or it will go into recovery mode.

Yes, and you cam actually try to downgrade from 1.1.4 directly to 1.1.1 to save time.

I have never had that happen to me. Try reinstalling the apps and if that doesnt work then try to redo the jailbreak, because maybe something went wrong.

Do a manual turn off by holding power and home until the screen turns off and then turn it back on. If it didn’t work, then restore back to 1.1.1 and try again. Nothing is perfect, but it will work eventually.

When it says connect to itunes, that means you did something wrong. You probably held the buttons for too long. This put it into restore mode. Connect it to itunes and start over.

Wow, you actually paid for the apps? With this method, you get them for free. The third party apps come from the jailbroken iPod program Installer that installs automatically when you jailbreak it.

It is actually impossible to see that you are in DFU mode, since the screen should be blank. You probably are in restore mode, and this means you held the buttons for too long. Go back to firmware 1.1.1 and start over. Step 6 is actually necessary, so just do it. It isn’t that hard.

Restore to firmware 1.1.1 and start my directions from there. The restore should delete your apps, but you can install them again and get them running smoothly.

Jeez, calm down. You do get them back by installing them after you jailbreak 1.1.3. It is in the instructions. But yes, it will erase them. Don’t worry, you get them back.

If the problem didn’t fix itself, hold power and home until it turns off. If it isn’t jailbroken, then start over by restoring to 1.1.1 and doing steps over again. Sorry, but stuff does happen.

You only power off if the jailbreak is stuck on a process for more than 20 minutes. You will know it is jailbroken if the Installer app is on your screen.

farmboy: yes you will have to replace everything you had on your iPod (don’t worry, you’ll get the January Update apps if you follow the instructions) and it won’t do anything to your computer (why should it, the only thing you’re using the computer for with this process is iTunes and downgrading to 1.1.1).
At multiple points when going 1.1.1 -> 1.1.3, it will look like it has frozen. It has not. Just wait.

I used this method to hack to 1.1.3 and I have no problems. I install anything I want and I get no errors at all. My only problem is that some of my songs don’t play. I thought maybe something happened when I uploaded them to my iPod, so I deleted them off and loaded them back on. Still not able to play. I then downgraded to 1.1.1 and put my music in there and it plays fine. Then I used your method for 1.1.3, but the music just doesn’t want to play. Please help! Thanks!
(Pertaining to my post on 115) I researched about why my music won’t play and a handful of people have the same problem. The music that wasn’t playing were the songs purchased from iTunes, so it has to do with the DRM. Some forums mentioned that they are having these problems from going from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3, but if they went from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 everything worked out fine. Maybe you might have a fix for this using the jailbreak mentioned here.
Also, I’m not sure if I’m the first to notice this (probably not), but I found a dial pad on my iPod touch with the 1.1.3 jailbreak you supplied us with. It really doesn’t do anything, but it’s kind of cool just to have. So, the way you access this dial pad is through your music. Here’s some steps to get into it:
1. Click on your music icon
2. Click on any song you want to play
3. When your on the screen with the album title, cover art, etc…double click on your home button twice fast
4. A screen should pop up with favorites, recents, contacts, keypad, and voicemail
That’s how you can access this screen. I guess this happens because the jailbreak supplied is an iPhone jailbreak (when I did the hack I saw something about iPhone firmware in it). Well, that’s it!

Ok, so I got jailbreakme to work. When I launched ijailbreakmobile, it popped up saying something..access denied.
i’m getting the unknown error when trying to restore to 1.1.1, i dont know if it is because i have the january software update or something, but i tried both methods for not getting the unknown error and neither are working

When i have installed the sources, i DON’T shut down. but when he installed iJailbreak it MUST go to the “unlock” screen, so when i unlock, and i start iJailbreak to go to jailbroken 1.1.3 from my jailbroken 1.1.1 he always said permission denied, i’ve tried it over 7 times, and every time i did reboot a new 1.1.1, install a new appsnap, but it’s still not working!!

If you install jiggy and the jiggy runtime, it will allow you to make apps using javascript to create the programs. So just learn that entire programming language. Then start. I am working on it too.

So after I use this jailbreak method will Summerboard and Customize both work, because I have already tried the ipodtouchmasters jailbreak and everytime I do it, I cant get summerboard or customize to work.
If Summerboard and Customize dont work, what do I have to do in order to make them work.

Does doing this delete all of the music on your ipod touch… If it does is there any way to copy all of the music off your ipod before you downgrade it?
I got to step two, and when i go to jailbreakme.com it gives me a tiny question mark in the top left hand corner of the safari window, everything went well till this step, please help….
ok so i did all this, and it works great and has some cool stuff. But know that i’m back to using the stock content, anything that was purchased on on itunes through my computer or ipod, doesn’t work. For music, it opens the song but doesn’t play, and for tv shows and music videos, it says the video could not be played. is there a way to fix that wothout unjailbreaking it? Please help. =D

Never mind. I apples delete all content and restore from inside of settings on the actual touch, and this worked. It did not undo any of the jailbreaking that i can tell so far. I hope you can use this info.

I tried getting the firmware 1.1.1 but even after i try the two things you mention about going back to 1.1.3 or putting it in recovery mode, it still says unkown error when i try to install 1.1.1 again
okay im on a Mac(sux) when i press the command key, and then “restore” it just restores normally!! why!?
I restored my 8GB iPod Touch to 1.1.1, went to http://www.jailbreakme.com, clicked on Install AppSnapp, and a new page loaded, but Safari never closed, even after a few minutes. What should I do?
Okay, I found out that I, too, am getting that little blue question mark. I know that means that I’ve installed AppSnapp before, and I need to restore. This means that I’m not restoring correctly because I’ve attempted it twice. I went to http://www.applewb.com/2008/03/04/list-of-all-iphone-and-ipod-touch-firmwares-10-102-111-112-113-114/ and downloaded the 1.1.1 software, and a little icon popped up on my desktop. But when I click on it, iTunes opens and nothing happens. How do I restore my iPod correctly?
what do I do when I click on ijailbreak and it says the install for 1.1.3 has completed but then it asks me to rename/replace a bunch of os files - do I click yes, no, none, etc…?

okay, i also just tried restoring it again… and when i run jailbreak… it keeps saying “Permission denied”!! why? (email)
Hi there, on step 5… I am not sure what’s happening but I just left my ipod here. The black prompt screen comes up and I see words saying, “Permission denied” and such. Lots of it actually.
Am I doing something wrong? I turned the auto-lock to never before I installed jailbreak..

i have downgraded succesfully to 1.1.3 but when i want to downgrade it to 1.1.1 there is an “The iPod could not be restored An unknown error occured (1)” message when it finishes to extract software.. how can i fix it?
i got it to 1.1.3 but i go to try 1.1.1 and it does the unknown error thing. ive tried adding a few songs then downgrading to 1.1.1 and it still didnt work. i don’t know how to do it! also before i restored it i bought the upgrade not knowing about jailbreaking after restoring it my upgrade was gone! now i cant get it back. im really kinda mad about that. so if you could help me get this to work that would be nice. thanx!

Hi guys, I’m having an issue here and I can’t find out what I am doing wrong.
I downgraded my firmware to 1.1.1, downloaded the Installer, BSD Subsystem package, and finnaly, the iJailbreak app. I get stuck at this point.I execute this last app and wait all that loooong time until it completes and restarts the iPod automatically. However, when I check the firmware in settings menu, it still shows 1.1.1. I tried this procedure like three or four times, with the same result. Now, what am I doing wrong? Someone help me please!

Just because it says 1.1.1 doesn’t mean it is. aDoes it look like 1.1.3? I don’t know what is going wrong. I would say keep trying, but I recommend the ZiPhone jailbreak. Much easier.

I will write a new post soon. Use ZiPhone with firmware 1.1.3 and it will work. Download the firmware 1.1.3 and upload it to you iPod. Use ZiPhone
if I jailbreak my iPod on one computer can I add songs from another comp will I loloose the jailbreak

You can get songs from other comps as long as you’re iPod/iPhone is set on manual and not automatic. You will not mess up the jailbreaks by using the same computer as a friend. Hope all goes well!

Ive gotten to the step where i have restored my Itouch to the 1.1.1 software but for some reason once i try connecting with the internet on my home wireless connection and going to jailbreakme.com to download Appsnap i just get the blue question mark after i click the Download. The FAQ says its cuz ive already downloaded it but i havent and ive even tried restoring it. Any assistance helps.

When i did this i couldnt play music. i think its cause if u jail break 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 it is not right. i think u need to got to 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 is what i heared. cna u make a tutorial on how to do 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. Please help thanks.

Once you’re iPod is jailbreaked…you don’t really need anything else to download. Sometime you might want is something to SSH onto it. That’s about it. Hope all goes well!

I personally haven’t used ijailbreakmobile before, so I don’t know how the process is. If it doesn’t seem like it’s doing anything, just do a hard reset and use a different jailbreak. Hope all goes well!

i downloaded the firmware 1.1.1 off the internet site, and then when i try to restore my ipod, it says that when it restores it will update the ipod with the newest firmware (1.1.4) how do i get it to download the 1.1.1 and not the 1.1.4?
