Today, I finally got my 16gb iPod Touch. I have been calling the stores near me a couple times a day and since I live about 45 minutes away I wanted to make sure they had ample supply before I was going to drive the distance to the apple store. (There are a couple around me since I live near the silicon valley). I found out a couple simple things that may be of interest to people still looking to find an iPod Touch.
1. Go to an Apple Retail Store (Many of the normal iPod resellers don’t have them yet)
2. Call in the morning (They get their shipments in from 9am-12pm)
3. They won’t tell you how many they have…but I asked the employee if I were to come from 45 min away what are my chances. (They answered this with no problem)
4. Press 5 when you call and begin to hear the automated recording …this is the fastest way to talk to someone at an apple retail store.
5. Find an employee right away (At the back of the store there are more)…they are selling fast and you don’t want to be there when they sell the last one to someone else.
6. Pay with credit card… if you pay with cash you may have to wait a bit because only certain registers can check you out.

And i went today to get another for my friend, my apple store was sold out, but the best buy near me just got them in today, 25 8 gigs and 20 16 gigs!
Well I got mine today at the BestBuy in lake forest, CA
they only had 16GB though
I went to the Apple Store in Chicagoland and they were able to hold on iPod for me up to 6PM the morning I called. I don’t know if this is a standard service but it was very convenient.
I’ve had mine since the 12th :)…
but it’s a defective one so I’m still waiting to exchange it
I was at the Apple store buying an Apple TV and the salesperson told me when they get their shipments in. I live an hour away from the closest apple store (Knoxville, Tn.) and I did exactly as explained in the blog. It worked like a charm. I called around 10:30 and they told me they received their shipment. Once I got in the store they told me they didn’t know what they had received but after convincing the salesman he went back and haggled the guy unpacking the shipment. I got two 16 gig iPod Touch’s very easily.
And they did tell me that if they know they have them in the back after unloading the shipment they can hold them as Bobby posted.
Just got email from Apple, my pre-ordered Touch has shipped. I ordered it very soon after the keynote. So that’s ten days early! Hopefully my screen doesn’t suck…
called my store, the guy told me they had 30 or 40 8GB models
I want to get one, but no unless we are sure we can hack this thing…
where do we stand?

Just go to bestbuy.com do a “fake” transaction but instead of shipping it to you house choose “pick up” put your zip code or a zip code close to you (if there’s no availability in your area) and hope to have at least 1 store to have it. I got mine on monday at Manassas, VA - but the store only sold the 8 Gig. Have fun hunting. Why wait when you can have it now!
Here’s a hack that sound more feasible. A weather widget would be nice, right?
Accuweather.com/iphone - offers a more iphone friendly interface and allows you to either go to the site through safari from the ipod touch or download the widget (but that’s only good for the mac).
Well if you try the website (using safari) then change the zip code that matches your area (FYI tiny “i” button at the lower right corner) you have what the normal iphone sees.
…. if we could only add an icon (widget) to the “main” display and some how link it to the website I think we will be in business with that one! Any takers?

What do you mean fake transaction? theres an option to see on the website if its available in a store near you without even going through with a transaction.
So what about the screen? I think I’ll wait a few more weeks until this problem gets cleared out.
Go to Costco - they are $10 less than List and they carry the 16GB version
