Apple has just announced that they will be releasing  an SDK in February for developers of 3rd party applications. This will allow people to create programs that will natively run on the iPod Touch and iPhone without having to jailbreak the device. This is great news for all iPhone and iPod Touch owners.

   this actually sucks in my opinion because now every one can add apps to their touch and phone and take away the exclusivity factor and not to mention the “how’d you do that. That’s so cool” factor

   Has there been any mention of a pricing or Iphone developers license? Something tells me Apple would never do such a thing unless they saw potential for a new revenue stream.

   thanks seth. I thought i was alone on this one. I mean seriously what can apple offer in the sdk that hackers havent already done without apple. Unless apple
   adds a download manager to safari that allows all users to install apps without installer.app this is actually a down since they will probably force us to use iTunes and relock the partition so we can’t use hacked apps made by the people in the hacking community because they will want to restrict that too.

   You have to be kidding me. You think by having less options and fewer opportunities to develop the platform is better for you in the long run? I can’t believe anyone thinks that having fewer developers and fewer applications, particularly so you can boast, or think of yourself special… dare I say COOL? Seriously man, think about it for a moment.

   With an SDK you’ll get more developers starting to pay attention to the platform, let along more people experimenting with it… it can only be a good thing.

   And no offense but hacking the iPod Touch is hardly a challenge with the software that has been released, it’s hardly exclusive and doesn’t make me. Anyway, just my two cents.

    Don’t be mad cause it’s not exclusivity hackers that can use apps, wasn’t that our goal to make 3ed party apps avibale to everyone? Apple just made it a little easier, be glad the iPod is not made by Microsoft.

    the main problem I see is that there are many applications that apple will most certainly not make available, such as the gba emulator, and then there is the almost certainty that apple will charge for its applications. The lack of iPod touch games on iTunes is an affirmation of the belief that apple had always planned on the want for real apps, and I would not be surprised if their programmers had played a part in the jailbreakng process to get the popularity of the apps up to compensate for the $5 charge that they will impose on the apps they release after they destroy jailbreaking in a future update.

    I actually think that this could lead 2 bigger things in the “touch hack” industry. It would suck if apple made us pay but u always hav 2 look on the bright side of life.
    I also agree with Dom that heaps touch games that r available @ the moment apple wouldn’t allow.
    Being a newbie 2 all of this its exciting to show ur friends wot u can do on ur ipod that they cant, but everything al and all leads back 2 apple and licensing and legal problems.
    As an apple.com/au member I bought my touch off there and a week ago I got an email from them saying not 2 use any jailbreaking technology.
    Lets all just hope that things will turn out the best 4 touch users not big companies.

    but there going to have company apps too so you will have to pay for those but not for the ones that people publish to be free
