Just when I thought that they could not make an mp3 player any smaller – apple does it again. Their new iPod shuffle is a pretty amazing piece of technology (they claim it is the world’s smallest mp3 player).

The new shuffle will use Apple’s “Voice-Over” to speak to you. It sounds pretty good and is surprisingly non-robotic for a computer. Harboring 4GB of space it will allow you to hold up to 1000 songs.

The only control on the the actual device is “off”, “shuffle” and “Stop”. Other than this all the controls are located on the headphones (proprietary of Apple of course). Hear you can push and hold the center to activate voice-over; push the center twice to get to the next song; use the volume controls; select playlist; etc.

It comes in both silver and black. It also includes a silver clip.

The Battery lasts 10 hours on a full charge.

Cost = $79.00

My new creation, in cooperation with iPodTouchHacks.com, is my new website StagHacks.com. It is a general hacking site, not just restricted to iPod Touch hacking. I will be covering a whole lot of different topics having to do with basically hacking life. I will be delving into how to hack Soda (Pop) machines, elevators, Windows, Macs (if I ever get one), and of course, Apple products. As of now, it is still in the initial stages. The look is not permanent, and any suggestions would be extremely helpful. I hope to see some comments on the site, and as always, I promise to answer any and every email that I receive.

Hope to see you there

One bad thing for those in the US is that the release is speculated to hit mainly China because it presents a more ideal market. This may be true, but I believe it would would most likely hit the US first.

Well, if you can’t make up your mind then test it for yourself. This Friday they were supposed to release a beta for testing. But, and this should not come as too big of a surprise, they delayed it for another couple of days. We will see when the next release comes out.

I use to be a writer about the time when firmware 1.1.4 came out…it’s been a while. Even though I left the site for a while, I still kept my 1G iPod touch hacked to the max. I currently have 2.1 firmware installed on mine and I’m not upgrading yet…I think my device is perfect as is. If you need any help with your iPod touch, don’t be afraid to ask in a comment or even email is fine. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll be in search to find a correct answer for you.

All of you torrent users out there will love this news. If you own a jailbroken iPod/iPhone, torrents can be in the palm of your hand. It is simple to use, whether you want it on your iPod or on your computer. Here is how to do it.

1. Download Stuff

In Cydia, download dTunes. This will download dTunes and Safari download plugins. The plugins do exactly what they say: they allow you to download any file from Safari.

In Cydia, download Mobile Terminal. You need this later.

2. Download files from thepiratebay.org.

You can download files from inside of dTunes, but it is hard to navigate n its window. In Safari, you have more control and it will work the same way.

3. Get the torrent running

Once you have downloaded the torrent file, open dTunes. Click on the torrent file. Click OK.

4. Open Mobile Terminal

Inside Mobile Terminal, type “./gettorrent” (without the quotations). This will start the downloading process. Depending on your internet connection and the amount of seeders, the speed will vary. Mine peaked at about 400 kbs.

5. Get the files

If you want to actually get the files instead of having them just be on your device, ssh (howto here) into your device. Your downloaded files will be in root/var/mobile/Library/Downloads. You can then find the files there and move/copy them from there.

Those of you who have been in the jailbreaking scene should be familiar with the name BigBoss. He is the hoster of countless apps in Cydia, and previously Installer. He has generously created a timeline of milestones he has achieved, which I found interesting. I actually remember these occurring, back in the day.

September 2007: BigBoss repository was born and run on my home computer at a markmon.mine.nu address that is now a dead link. The repository was for installer (1.7 at the time) and hosted a few small packages and fixes. The repository was started purely for fun as a side project. The repository was named “BigBoss repository” at that time (named after its owner, BigBoss), a name that carried through for months.

December 2007: BigBoss was looking for a host because it was too much traffic for his little home network connection. Sleepers stepped up to offer hosting. The repostory, still “BigBoss repository” moved to sleepers.net for hosting.

Feb 2008: BigBoss enters community sources in installer 3 thanks to Nullriver and Drudge. BigBoss only has 25 packages at this time.

March 2008: BigBoss registers “thebigboss.org” domain name and moves the repository to that domain, its permanent home through today. Hosting at that time was still hosted by sleepers.net

May 2008: Drudge gives Conceited Software to Bigboss. BigBoss merges this well-known community source into his own. This provided enough packages to surpass STE packaging and BigBoss become the largest community source. Repository kept its name, “BigBoss Repository”.

May 2008: Cydia side of the repository is born on 1.1.x platforms.

June 2008: Skylar gives his community source to BigBoss. Repository is still known as “BigBoss Repository”.

June 2008: BigBoss partners up wtih planet-iphones and repository is known as “BigBoss and Planet-iPhones”. Themes are done by planet-iphones and other done by BigBoss. This is actually very helpful because up to this point, BigBoss did all his own packaging. Now the work is divided. Partnership still exists today.

May-July 2008: BigBoss gets 6 more servers to host the high traffic generated by becoming a community source.

July 2008: The 2.0 iPhone software is released. The 1.1.x installer repository is abandoned with over 275 packages – the largest repostiory on 1.1.x. At this time, a new repository is born for 2.0 from scratch. Cydia is all that’s supported since no installer exists at this time for 2.0.

August 2008: Installer 4 beta comes out. BigBoss repository moves to installer4. But due to bugs with the beta and unmet dependencies only found in Cydia only a small amount of packages are migrated to installer 4.

July – Sept 2008: BigBoss gets another 10 servers to handle the bandwidth.

October 2008: BigBoss moves hosting of the packages file away from sleepers.net hosting the repostiory on his own servers only. (The 16 some file servers did not change). Since the domain was always thebigboss.org or bigboss.us.com (same domain) there was no change noticed or required for users.

November 2008: BigBoss gets a 2nd dedicated server to handle cpu and connection count issues.

December 2008: BigBoss repository has grown to 850 packages across 18 servers!

Wow. I know. A lot of stuff. Personally, I would like to thank BigBoss for all of the hard work he has put into the jailbreaking community. Good job, and keep up the excellent work. For more information, go to http://thebigboss.org/.

You don’y really need detailed instructions on how to jailbreak to 2.2. It is just way too easy. This is just to answer some questions and give some pointers to the process.

If you want to keep all of your Apps.

Install “AptBackup” from Cydia and run the app. Click “Backup”.

If you want to only keep certain Apps

Personally, I recommend doing this. Personally, I add a lot of Apps and then never use them. This slows down the iPod and can result in crashes or slower performances. What I would suggest is opening Cydia and clicking “Manage” and then “Packages”. Take some screenshots (hold home and power and your screen will flash white) of all of the apps you have. Then sync your iPod and save your pictures from your iPod (as a removable disk). THen you will have all of the apps you had and can figure out which ones you would like to keep.

Now go into iTunes and click “Update”.

Update your iPod. DO NOT RESTORE (unless you want to start from scratch).

Pwn in QuickPwn (download here)

Read my other post on how to use QuickPwn (here)

If you downloaded the firmware from iTunes, here is where it is “C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates”

If you kept all of your apps, then open Cydia and download “AptBackup” (which you used earlier) and run it. Click “Restore” and it will download all of your apps that you previously had.

NOTE: Updating DOES NOT delete your jailbroken apps. It only erases the “icon” (viewable part). Reinstalling the app will show the icon and allow all data to be the same from where you left off. Restoring will delete everything on your iPod, including apps, data, music, etc

He has posted a warning to all jailbreakers on his site, which I think needs to be spread and heeded.

Pusher is RiPDev’s 2.2 version of a jailbreak. This should be avoided and not used. Instead use the dev team’s jailbreaks. RiPDev’s version will block access to / partition and make it impossible to install Cydia. (They want you using Installer of course). It’s pretty much worthless since most the packages are in Cydia. The dev team’s jailbreak allows you to use both Cydia and Installer. There is no valid reason to use Pusher instead of one of the pwnages below.

Update: This point had to be made. Pusher tries to say it doesn’t void your warranty indicating that it is different than pwnage / quickpwn in this regard. It is not. This is a lie! Your warranty is “officially” voided, although a simple restore in iTunes undoes any jailbreak and you can always get warranty service. Using pusher or pwnage makes no difference in this regard.

Pusher is not better for newbies. The purpose of jailbreaking is to get as much non-appstore software onto your device as you can. Installer only offers abotu 8% of what is in Cydia. Certainly having 8% of the software packages is not good for newbies.

So beware. Do not use this method for jailbreaking. I have not posted a link for the jailbreak on purpose, although Googleing isn’t hard to do. Just be careful and stick with thhe trustworthy Dev Team that brought us QuickPwn.
