iOS 4.3 Jailbreak Tutorial!

Author : rooster

Apple is preparing on launching iOS 4.3 either today or in the very near future. Good news: it’s already be jailbroken! PwnageTool has already jailbroken the iOS 4.3 beta and is therefore believed to be able to jb the final version as well.

The Jailbreak works on the iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch 4G!

This is a semi-tethered jailbreak! It is also not that easy so be wary!

All Downloads can be found at the bottom of the file

Good Luck

———————————————————————————————-

1. Download PwnageTool bundle for your version of iOS device

2. Extract and end up with these two files: CydiaInstaller.bundle and a .bundle file, for this guide, we are using iPhone 4 bundle iPhone3, 1_4.3_8F5148b.bundle. Move all these files to your desktop.

3. Download PwnageTool 4.1.2 and copy it to your desktop. Right click, and then click on “Show Package Contents”

4. Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and paste iPhone3, 1_4.3_8F5148b.bundle file in this location.

5. Now go to Contents/Resources/CustomPackages and here replace the CydiaInstaller.bundle file with the version that you downloaded in Step 1, and then simply close this folder.

6. Download iOS 4.3

7. Start PwnageTool in expert mode and select your device

8. Find your ipsw and select it

9. Select Build

10. Quite PwnageTool

11. Download Ramdisk_Maker.zip, extract the file, and move the folder to your desktop

12. Now open ramdisk_maker.sh file, and edit the paths required in a program like TextEdit, as shown highlighted in this screenshot.

13. Now start Terminal and run the following commands:

cd desktop

cd ramdisk_maker

./ramdisk_maker.sh

14. Follow directions that pop up in terminal:

15. First, create a folder on desktop named My_Ramdisk. Then change the extension of the original iOS 4.3 Beta file from .ipsw to .zip, and then extract this .zip file.

16. Here you will see a file named 038-0408-002.dmg. This is the file we need. Copy this file to My_Ramdisk folder that you created on desktop.

17. Once you have done that, you will notice that Terminal screen will automatically move to the next step.

18. Now go to ramdisk_maker folder that you saved earlier on desktop, here open the fileOptions.plist in a program like TextWrangler (available for free on the Mac App Store). Here change the <integer></integer> value under SystemPartitionSize <key></key> to 1116

19. Now save this Options.plist file and move it to My_Ramdisk folder. At this point, you will once again notice that Terminal will automatically move to complete the process.

20. Once done, you will now notice a new file named final_ramdisk.dmg in My_Ramdiskfolder. Rename this file as 038-0408-002.dmg

21. Now change the extension of the custom iOS 4.3 Beta firmware file that you created earlier from .ipsw to .zip, and then extract this .zip file.

22. Here, replace 038-0408-002.dmg file with the one you created in Step 19 above.

23. Now select all files, and click on “Compress 9 Items” so that it is converts back into .zip file. Now change the extension of this .zip file to .ipsw and you are done making the custom firmware, with fixed ramdisk.

24. Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

25. This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file that you created in Step 24 above, and click on “Open”.

26. wait

27. Since it is semi-tethered you will need tetherboot to help here. So download Tetherboot and extract it

28. First, we will need three files from the original iOS 4.3 Beta firmware namely:kernelcache.release.n90iBEC.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu, and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu.

Change the extension of the original iOS 4.3 Beta file from .ipsw to .zip, like you did in Step 15 above, and then extract this .zip file.

Now copy kernelcache.release.n90 file, and then copy iBEC.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu, andiBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu files which are found under /Firmware/dfu/.

Move all these three files, and tetheredboot utility to a new folder named “tetheredboot” on the desktop

29. Now to boot your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into tethered mode, connect it with your computer and start it in Recovery Mode by holding Home and Power buttons until the connect to iTunes screen appears on your device.

30.Start Terminal and run the following commands:

sudo sh

enter your administrator password, then:

cd desktop/tetheredboot

./tetheredboot iBSS kernel

31. At some point you will be asked to enter DFU mode

32. Wait

33. Have some food and take a break that was kinda ridiculous! You’re done though so also have some fun!

———————————————————————————————-

This year in Apple: iPad 2, Verizon iPhone, Mac App Store, Cydia App Store, Cool Tablets!

Author : rooster

due to the recent drought in jailbreaking news I have a few tidbits to share on the world of Apple:

1.  Mac App Store is here!

However trite you may deem it, I see this launch as a very monumental one. . . especially for all those hackers out there. For the official assembly of all that software can certainly be made into an opportunity for those that seek to hack that software. This release also brings us that much closer to the Cydia App store!

    2. New iPad design rumors seem right on the money!

According to a recently released CES iPad 2nd generation case mock-ups, the spec rumors previously posted seem to be very accurate:

    • A Facetime Camera for video calls
    • Design: Thinner from front to back and supposedly skinnier from side to side as well.
    • New High Definition screen
    • Much needed, much better speakers.
    • The new back is more flat and iPod Touch Like with a reduced size of 239 mm by 186 mm which means a slight decrease in the size of the bezel.
    • The sides of the iPad 2 should be flat, like the iPhone 4, making it easier to hold.

    3.  Verizon iPhone

Don’t get too excited yet but I think that if it’s going to happen, it will happen sometime very soon. The CES event today went as expected, the Verizon CEO did not mention anything about the iPhone. Although this may sound like bad news, I’m sure that Steve would have wanted to announce the news were it a reality. It was however announced that something big was primed for 1/11/11.

Some additional evidence has been brought to the table (very idealistic). It seems that Apple has limited retail store staff vacations for the coming months . . . for a big launch perhaps??

    4. More Social Network stuff

Although personally not excited about more Ping-like experiments, I am social and I do love music and I believe, therefore, that there can be a good combination. It seems Apple is moving towards trying more social networking things this year.

    5. The year of the Tablets

Many are calling this the year of the tablets . . . great news I say. As seen in the phone market, competition like the android market has forced Apple to keep moving, I’m hoping the same happens in the tablet arena. What I’m especially excited for is Android Honeycomb (check out a video here)

Google Voice IS FINALLY HERE (for the iPod Touch and iPhone)

    Author : rooster

So, for all those who have fallen in love with Google Voice and its amazing features, you will be proud to know that Apple has finally allowed a Google Voice to be made!

Unbelievable as it may sound, the App store has conceded. Of course, it’s also free, like any Google App should be!

It has what you think an official Google Voice app has: push notifications for new texts and voicemails, something prior GV apps couldn’t quite handle without a third-party workaround.

Oh yeah, and, like google, its fast! The texts come in much faster than even through the AT&T network which is pretty cool!

The biggest change I see is that it accesses the actual number you want to call and therefore forgoes that annoying feature of calling you, to call your friend. So, it only dials once, which is awesome.

However, there are a few caveats to the app:

    • Not many setting you can change; but, it is in its infancy and I’m sure Google will provide updates sometime in the near future.
    • There’s no way to add new phones, change calling groups, or schedule anything.

What I hope google provides is a bit more inclusive all in one app that doesn’t just link you to their site but instead provides you native access to google docs, gmail, google voice, the big ones!

Either way, if you don’t already have a google voice account, I’d highly recommend it. Check out more here.

iPad Coming to Verizon Wireless on OCT 28!

    Author : rooster

Finally, Version Wireless gets some of the action.

Apple has partnered with both AT&T and Verizon Wireless to start selling its marveled iPad starting the 28th!

. . . but Verizon gets shafted again.

AT&T will be selling the full 3G iPad models that offer pre-paid 3G data service through AT&T. Verizon, however, will not be supporting the 3G iPad. Instead, Verizon Wireless will be only supporting the WiFi-only iPads. Verizon will be selling these bundled with Verizon’s MiFi 3G hotspot device. This device will collect the 3G and then send it over to the iPad via Wifi. This is great an all. . . but frankly, who wants to have to turn on, let alone carry, two separate devices.

    Prices:
    iPad + MiFi bundles: $629.99, $729.99, and $829.99

The MiFi device is compatible with up to 5 separate devices and comes included in this price. This price is the same as the 3G model price. The only good news is that the MiFi offers plans up to 1GB for $20 a month.

    Antenna Problem with iPhone 4

    Author : rooster

As most of you have probably already heard on some blog or another, the new iPhone, 600,000 of which were sold in one day, has had some issues with its “genius antenna”. The antenna surround the entire iPhone and is located in the metallic bezel.

Unfortunately, a disconcerting amount of users have been complaining that holding the device in their left hand, accounts for a loss of signal. The effect is almost immediately apparent and can quickly be fixed by merely not holding the device in your left hand.

But this is no real fix and Apple will supposedly release iPhone iOS 4.01 tomorrow to fix that bug. Steve Jobs is reported to have declared the problem a “non-issue”. . . oh steve.

Apple Leaks Rumors, Tablet to support multiple network providers!

    Author : rooster

So Apple is the big brother. It has been leaking its own controlled rumors all along according to one Mactropolis report. Here is a quote from an ex Apple Employee:

I know, because when I was a Senior Marketing Manager at Apple, I was instructed to do some controlled leaks.

The way it works is that a senior exec will come in and say, “We need to release this specific information. John, do you have a trusted friend at a major outlet? If so, call him/her and have a conversation. Idly mention this information and suggest that if it were published, that would be nice. No e-mails!”

Another source reports that Apple will be making its tablet cross-network compatible:

Computerworld is reporting that a Broadpoint AmTech analyst claims that Apple will introduce the much-rumored Apple tablet with 3G wireless networking functionality with support for multiple network providers, Verizon being a “certainty” amongst them.

3G service in a device like this would mean that the device itself would be internet-centric, meaning web based media would be this devices primary purpose(As if no one already figured that out). It also goes without saying that here in the States, the only network supplier for the iPhone is AT&T, but the exclusivity documents tying iPhone to AT&T are expected to expire sometime in mid-2010.

More Tablet News, Better iPods, Verizon (70%), & RFID?

    Author : rooster

    Better iPods

    * AppleRumors.com reports that Apple “is working on improving the audio/video experience of their iPod andiPhones”. They give the following two examples for possible improvements:

For example, the usage metadata may indicate that a user skips, on average, the first 22 seconds of a particular song so the next time that song is played, the first 22 seconds will automatically be skipped.

    &

The System Does not Have Sufficient Power for Playing the Entire Selected Video Segment.
Choose “Adjust Settings” for Lowering Power Consumption or Otherwise Choose “View Video” to View Selected Video for the Remaining Time.

In addition to these possibilities, Apple may also include a feature that makes the more frequently played songs more likely to show up on shuffle than those frequently skipped.

    Apple insider also mentions:

Give the iPhone a battery that lasts longer than one day. “Apple has introduced advanced battery technology with its portable Macs,” he writes, “and we expect the company to dramatically improve the iPhone battery life with the next several hardware launches.”

    Verizon

    * A Silicon Alley insider, Chris Larsen, estimates an Apple / Verizon deal to be about 70%

    RFID

    * Although the idea of Radio Frequency Identification chip in mobile devices has taken a dive in popularity, sources report that:

Turn the iPhone into a digital wallet. Munster predicts that future iPhones will have built-in RFID technology, allowing them to make retail payments with a single swipe.

    Tablet

    * Many are expecting the MacTablet (or one of its 10 other names) will be released at a price level equivalent to that of its other hardware, but some boldly disagree by saying it may just be priced “shockingly low”:

I hope that’s Apple’s strategy, because I can’t help but feel that a $1000 tablet–without immediate price cuts–would almost certainly fail. The Kindle crowd wants a cheap ($200) device for reading books. Students need a conventional laptop for school work. And smartphone users wouldn’t swap their handsets for a large, bulky slate–nor would they carry two separate mobile devices.

Google Chrome & Google Chrome OS

    Author : rooster

So since jailbreaking news has been pretty dry lately I have been testing out some Google products.

Google Chrome: Absolutely Awesome. In my opinion this browser is by far the best. It is unbelievably fast and stable (even in the developer mode), has bookmark sync, and has some great extensions! Download Chrome here!

    Extensions I use:

    • Adsweep
    • Alwitt’s Facebook enhancer
    • Chrome Reader
    • GetYouTube
    • Gmail Checker
    • Grooveshark Ad remover
    • iMacros for Chrome
    • SmoothScroll
    • Switch HTTP Proxy.

Google Chrome OS: cool but not quite ready yet and runs really slow in virtualbox on my semi-decent laptop. Try it here.

Google Tasks in Gmail: a really nice little To-do list built right into your Gmail page. To activate this and many other handy add-ones for you gmail account go to settings>labs in Gmail.

Google Wave: Very very cool and fun. Although, I must admit it is frustrating to find only 2 other contacts online at any given point in time. Once Wave becomes more public it will probably be running side by side with Facebook more often.

The New iPod Shuffle – “Look Ma, No Buttons”

    Author : rooster

Just when I thought that they could not make an mp3 player any smaller – apple does it again. Their new iPod shuffle is a pretty amazing piece of technology (they claim it is the world’s smallest mp3 player).

The new shuffle will use Apple’s “Voice-Over” to speak to you.  It sounds pretty good and is surprisingly non-robotic for a computer. Harboring 4GB of space it will allow you to hold up to 1000 songs.

The only control on the the actual device is “off”, “shuffle” and “Stop”. Other than this all the controls are located on the headphones (proprietary of Apple of course). Hear you can push and hold the center to activate voice-over; push the center twice to get to the next song; use the volume controls; select playlist; etc.

It comes in both silver and black. It also includes a silver clip.

The Battery lasts 10 hours on a full charge.

    Cost = $79.00
