How to Fix a Bricked Phone/iPod Touch

Author : rooster

1) DFU restore. This is probably the first thing you should try:
  • a) Connect your iPhone to your PC
  • b) Turn off your iPhone
  • c) Hold power (= sleep) and home at the same time for exactly 10 seconds.
  • d) then release power but continue to hold the home until the computer recognizes your USB device                                              (this is usually accompanied by a beep.
  • e) After iTunes detects your iPhone you should be all set
  • note) if the apple logo appears on your iPhone you have booted into recovery mode (not DFU mode)                                            and should start the process again.
2) DFU persistence.
  • Keep trying the above method if the phone will not boot into DFU mode. Sometimes it can take 5+ tries to work.
3) Charger DFU method.
  • Connect you iPhone to a wall charger and hold down the power key for ten seconds. Then take it off the charger and connect to your PC and repeat the steps in #1.
4) LIB USB method.
  • a) instal LibUsb-Win32 drives on your PC
  • b) Plug your iPhone into your pc
  • c) follow the steps in #1
As you can see, DFU mode is really your best bet.
Good luck!

Jobs on “flash”

Author : rooster

Steve Jobs submitted “thoughts on flash” today.

He gives a few reasons why Apple has not yet allowed flash on their portable devices:

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true.

Then Gruber points out that:

We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

I wouldn’t urge you to hold your breath either. Instead, some parties, like Netflix and Hulu, are planning on using HTML5 for their flash requirements.

New. . . Everyting?

Author : rooster

MacBook Pro – it has been 66 days since the MBPs last update and the rumor mill has been turning quickly. Apple’s new version of the MBP should have any number of updates among these being the intel i5 or i7 processor and an updated “graphic processor transitioning device”. This new transitioning device is rumored to switch between the graphics cards seamlessly as to maximize battery power in the upper level MBPs.

MacBook Air – Only 11 days since the last update so “maybe”. I have not read much about any anticipated changes so my guess is as good as yours.

MacPro - it has been 336 days since the last update. With an average of 236 days between updates we can expect a release very soon. The biggest change is a suspected update to Intel 6-core Xeon Gulftown processors.

Because all these laptops are due for an update I can definitely see Apple revamping the whole lineup (excluding the new macbook of course). We’ll hopefully see very very soon.

iPhone - Long time here as well; its been almost 100 hundred days over the average. Expect a new iPhone to enter the market as well. Apple has patented some very interesting ideas lately that relate to the users swiping their finger over the camera to control music playback and such. . . interesting. Expect something cool!

Don’t Update. . . unless your battery % is wrong

Author : rooster

Apple’s recent firmware update, 3.1.3, is unnecessary unless you have been experiencing issues with your battery percentage. But because some people will want to update anyway while and keep their iPhone/iPod Touch  jailbroken, the dev-team announces PwnageTool 3.1.5.

The Dev-team gives the details:

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

Here is the torrent link and here are further instructions. . .

Have fun but be careful.

DO NOT UPDATE!!!

Author : rooster

Apple just released a new iPhone 3.1.3 OS and updating will kill your chances of Jailbreaking if you are on either the iPhone 3GS or the iPod Touch 2G with “MC serial”.

iPod Touch Fans continues. . .

It also contains a new baseband that has not been hacked and so if you need to unlock your iPhone 3G you should avoid upgrading.

Blacksn0w has not been updated and does not work with 3.1.3 but the ever industrious Dev-Team have made a few tweaks to their recently released redsn0w 0.9 tool so that it will jailbreak OS 3.1.3 on iPod touch 1G, older models of the iPod touch 2G, iPhone 2G and contract (no unlock required) iPhone 3G.

If you’re a 3GS owner then you need to make sure you have backed up your ECID/SHSH signatures through Cydia or Rock to ensure that when Apple stop signing the 3.1.2 firmware you can restore or downgrade to 3.1.2 if required.

Sorry for the bad news, updates to come!

Better Web Apps, 128GB iPod Touch & 64GB iPhone

Author : rooster

Apple recently released an update that allows web-apps to be more fully integrated unto the iPhone/iPod Touch.  They have removed the obnoxious “web-bar” from the top and allowed an integrated bottom tool bar that doesn’t move when you scroll.  Good move by Apple as this will surely boost App development since building a web app can be done in a graphical user interface while building .api(s) does take a considerable amount of manual Objective-C programming. But the biggest change this brings is the dis-intermediation of the Apple filter which rejects a huge percentage of offline applications.

Toshiba has announced its creation of 64GB chips. Since the iPhone only has one storage slot as opposed to the iPod Touch’s two slots, we will probably see 64GB iPhones and 128GB iPod Touches in the near future.

The World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) is rumored to take place on either June 28th or July 2nd.

iPod Touch (with Camera), Apple MacTablet, Faster Macbook Pro. . .

Author : rooster

With Apple’s stock predicted to rise generously in the coming months, there must be some new releases pending; here are some rumors and recent updates:

iPod Touch with Camera - The Examiner reports:

We have heard from an inside source who claims the camera version of the iPod Touch 3G will be released this Spring. The source confirms to us that the iPod Touch 3G with camera had actually been planned for release this past September, but had problems passing quality control.

Unfortunately, the new iPod will only have the video-only capability of the new iPod Nano. However, I was thinking that merely playing the video and stopping it at a desired frame and then taking a screenshot (home+sleep) would probably work well enough.

iPod Click Wheel Games – Apple will no longer be making iPod Click wheel supported games…

MacTablet, and a cheap one at that? – Although it sounds very un-apple-ish, some sources have reported that Apple’s MacTablet will be priced, and I quote, “Shockingly low!” Sounds to good to be true, and although most rumors place the tablet at 9-10 inches in diameter, Macrumors reports that it may be as low as 7 in.

Faster Macbook Pro – The Macbook product cycle predicts a new release in 20 days or so. Releasing the new Macbook on Christmas is highly unlikely and so I would predict the new MBP to come some time in January. Macrumors reports:

Intel is planning on launching three Arrandale-based processors on January 3rd, 2010. These Arrandale processors are based on the advanced Nehalem architecture first introduced into desktop Macs earlier this year, and should represent a significant performance improvement over the Core 2 Duo processors that are currently found in Apple’s MacBook Pros.

The three new processors will be branded under the “Core i5″ and “Core i7″ names and range from 2.4GHz to 2.66GHz with prices ranging from $225 to $332 in quantities of 1000. While Fudzilla describes their TDP (thermal design power) of 35W as “not so attractive”, it matches up with the current high-end processors used in the MacBook Pro. This means Apple could use these processors in a new MacBook Pro update.

Apple News

Author : rooster

So here are just some recent interesting news bits about Apple and its products:

  • Apple will be focusing on a more gaming oriented device in the future. This is not to say that the iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s other capabilities will be degraded but rather that Apple plans on putting special emphasis on graphic development and other important gaming related aspects.
  • Apple released its web-based iTunes preview so you no longer need to launch iTunes immediately just to listen to some songs or watch a video preview.
  • Apple Tablet rumors are running high:
  • If the rumors are true, the tablet will be able to do basically everything a gadget could possibly do. It’s an e-reader, a gaming device, and a music player. You can watch TV and movies on it and surf the Internet (or so we’ve heard). And it will have thousands of third-party apps available for it … or maybe it will run Mac OS X. That’s all still unknown.
  • CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IF YOU HAVE OPENSSH & JAILBROKEN YOUR IPOD!

Dev News, Dropbox, and the new iMacs

Author : rooster

Although the Dev Teams has not posted any news on their site, iPod Touch Fans reports that they have seen a tweet that confirms that they have successfully jailbrocken the new 3.1 Software for the iPhone 3Gs.  So expect a PwnageTool for that soon.  The good news here is that this might lead the Dev Team to Jailbreak the 3.1 software for the iPod Touch 3G as well.

Dropbox arrives at the App Store:
I thought the release of this really cool new app is noteworthy as well. Dropbox is a free application that gives you up to 2gb of storage.

NEW iMACS!
Supposedly, since Apple has cut orders for their old line of iMacs, a new line is on the horizon (as early as Oct. 9th). My biggest question here is if they will incorporate Blu-Ray Technology AND cut costs. I’m hoping for both but only time will tell.

Still a Camera Possible for the iPod Touch

Author : rooster

Although Apple’s latest release of the iPod Touch 3G was not quite as good as it should have been, this little bit of news cheered me up. Apple was rumored to have had manufacturing problems with iPod Touch and was therefore unable to release it with a video camera. PCW reports that a update BY CHRISTMAS may include a this highly coveted Video Camera:

I’ve also heard that Apple wants to have these things in full production by Christmas and that they’ve made only a few months of camera-less models to tide the market over until the new ones are ready.

PCW also offers some more information by hypothesizing that:

The conventional wisdom is that Apple will put the camera into the higher end iPods ($299/$399 – 32GB/64GB) only and leave the $199 model to be a 2nd-gen model. The higher end iPods have the processor speed and the Open GL 2.0 capabilities to do video, the 2nd Gen does not. This is exactly the same pricing/feature structure as exists on the iPhone.

Based on this, my advice is to wait for just a few more months and see what happens.
