This past monday, as many of you have already heard (and maybe watched) Apple had its annual WWDC.
Although not much was promised, some very exciting releases were introduced. Here is a quick summary to see what’s new:
1. Mac OSX Lion
A typical Apple release behavior, this newest release does not really revamp the OS, rather it enhances what it already has. Lion seems to focus mainly on emulating iOS in navigation, multi touch gestures, organization, and UI style. It sports over 250 new features; some of the more prominent ones include fullscreen apps, a multi-tasking feature called Mission Control, and another organization feature called Launch Pad. But most surprisingly, instead of being priced at $125 dollars, it will only cost $25. And yet, this is not so surprising seeing as it is more of a heavy update rather than a new OS. Either way, it looks like a solid release.
2. iOS 5
The biggest relief here is notifications, they finally added the, very Android like, drop down notification bar and no longer will you be interrupted midgame for a text message. Instead the status bar at the top merely flips to show the notification and allows for continuous concentration on the angry birds game at hand. Apple also introduced News Stand (iBook for magazines and newspapers) as well as a tabbed Safari (as well as offline support). Another new feature called Reminders acts as a nice, calendar integrated to-do list. Photos allow crop and rotate as well as using the volume button for the shutter release. iPhone can now be PC-Free, meaning they work straight out of the box. With software updates via wireless connection and a updated GameCenter as well as wireless data syncing, this update is quite a luxurious one!
3. iCloud
By far the most momentous release of the day, iCloud was introduced by Steve Jobs himself who focused on the “it just works” mantra (potentially ad-nauseum). This new feature is truly awesome and houses a lot of potential for growth. Most all data will be synced online, completely wireless, encrypted, and extremely fast! The only caveat, a $24 dollar/year price tag. And while this is better than Amazon’s option, we here at iTHs really don’t like paying for our features

The iPhone dev team recently reported that, with the help of the chronic dev team, “This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock”.
PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:
- iPhone3G
- iPhone3GS
- iPhone4
- iPhone4-Verizon
- iPod touch 3G
- iPod touch 4G
- iPad
- AppleTV 2G
Other improvements:iBooks has been fixed to work with books protected by DRM.
- The wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed as well.
Thank you Dev Team!

due to the recent drought in jailbreaking news I have a few tidbits to share on the world of Apple:
1. Mac App Store is here!
However trite you may deem it, I see this launch as a very monumental one. . . especially for all those hackers out there. For the official assembly of all that software can certainly be made into an opportunity for those that seek to hack that software. This release also brings us that much closer to the Cydia App store!
2. New iPad design rumors seem right on the money!
According to a recently released CES iPad 2nd generation case mock-ups, the spec rumors previously posted seem to be very accurate:
- A Facetime Camera for video calls
- Design: Thinner from front to back and supposedly skinnier from side to side as well.
- New High Definition screen
- Much needed, much better speakers.
- The new back is more flat and iPod Touch Like with a reduced size of 239 mm by 186 mm which means a slight decrease in the size of the bezel.
- The sides of the iPad 2 should be flat, like the iPhone 4, making it easier to hold.
3. Verizon iPhone
Don’t get too excited yet but I think that if it’s going to happen, it will happen sometime very soon. The CES event today went as expected, the Verizon CEO did not mention anything about the iPhone. Although this may sound like bad news, I’m sure that Steve would have wanted to announce the news were it a reality. It was however announced that something big was primed for 1/11/11.
Some additional evidence has been brought to the table (very idealistic). It seems that Apple has limited retail store staff vacations for the coming months . . . for a big launch perhaps??
4. More Social Network stuff
Although personally not excited about more Ping-like experiments, I am social and I do love music and I believe, therefore, that there can be a good combination. It seems Apple is moving towards trying more social networking things this year.
5. The year of the Tablets
Many are calling this the year of the tablets . . . great news I say. As seen in the phone market, competition like the android market has forced Apple to keep moving, I’m hoping the same happens in the tablet arena. What I’m especially excited for is Android Honeycomb (check out a video here)

Well, although it has no release period from which to estimate the next release. . . we all know it is about time that Apple released the iPad 2.
Of course, its planned so that everyone has enough time to receive one for Christmas, enjoy it for 2-3 month, and then have that sleek design put to shame by Apple’s next version.
No doubt, Apple’s marketing team knows how to sell.
Well, here are the most recent rumors concerning Apple’s next iPad:
- Release Date: Late February / Early April
- A Facetime Camera for video calls
- A gyroscope for advanced gaming sensitivity
- Design: Thinner from front to back and supposedly skinnier from side to side as well.
- New High Definition screen
- A supposed usb connector . . . but I personally don’t believe it
- Much needed, much better speakers.
- The new back is more flat and iPod Touch Like with a reduced size of 239 mm by 186 mm which means a slight decrease in the size of the bezel.
- The sides of the iPad 2 should be flat, like the iPhone 4, making it easier to hold.

Yesterday, the dev team announced its carrier unlock for the iPhone 3G/3GS for owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04!
Route #1 (redsn0w for OSX + Windows):
- If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and are already unlockable but want to get to 4.2.1, please wait til the dev team releases an “unofficial” bundle for you.
- Use redsn0w for OSX or Windows. Enable the “Install iPad baseband” option and accept the warning.
- When the redsn0w ramdisk is finished, install ultrasn0w via Cydia.
- Enjoy!
Route #2 (PwnageTool for OSX):
- If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and are already unlockable but want to get to 4.2.1, please wait til the dev team releases an “unofficial” bundle for you. Read no further.
- Download this IPSW
- Run PwnageTool to create a custom 4.1 IPSW. Tell it you want to use the iPad baseband you just downloaded. Restore to this custom IPSW.
- Install ultrasn0w through Cydia
- Enjoy!

DEV TEAM WARNING: If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time. You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!
ps. (Windows 7 and Vista users, please run redsn0w as Administrator in “XP Compatiblity Mode”)

The Dev Team just released PwnageTool 4.1.2 for Mac OS X!
But…
ULTRASN0W UNLOCKERS BEWARE!! ULTRASN0W UNLOCKERS BEWARE!! The biggest mistake you can make (and it is a big one!) is lettings iTunes restore to the official IPSW — you’ll lose the unlock and won’t be able to go back! You must use Option-Restore, not just the Restore button by itself. Then navigate to your custom IPSW — not to the stock one! If you accidentally started a restore to the official IPSW, unplug your iPhone immediately before the restore gets to the “Updating Firmware” step!
This exploit works untethered on these devices at firmware 4.1:
- AppleTV 2G
- iPad (firmware 3.2.2)
- iPod touch 4G
- iPod touch 3G
- iPhone4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 3G
So, what does PwnageTool do:
IT allows you to restore a custom made IPSW file. Ex) you can restore to a pre-jailbroken firmware while still keeping your current baseband. For iPhone 3G users, one can also get their own boot and recovery logos as well as multitasking and battery charge percentage.
PwnageTool’s main advantage to ramdisk-based methods (limera1n, greenpois0n, redsn0w) is for unlockers — those that need to keep their current baseband and preserve their ultrasn0w unlock. But in this new age of both bootrom- and userland-based exploits, it’s an excellent platform for continuing the jailbreak through all future firmwares.

Well, geohot has done it again, and with class. . . it was a surprise.
Almost randomly and certainly with great surprise, geohot has released limera1n, the newest jailbreak tool. This is a bootrom-level jailbreak that works on a great amount of devices:
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPod Touch 3G
iPod 4G
iPad
AppleTV 2G
DO NOT USE LIMERA1N IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W CARRIER UNLOCK — wait for PwnageTool to incorporate the limera1n exploit. This is so that you can avoid updating your baseband and losing the unlock (possibly forever).
TO DO BEFORE YOU JAILBREAK:
Backup your SHSH hashes for 4.1.
- This can be accomplished by either using Cyida – which is probably the easiest
- Or using Tiny Umbrella – which allows you to always come back to an untethered, jailbreakable 4.1 on your device.
and finally, here is the limrain!

Although Apple first generation products are known to be the most groundbreaking, its not till later generations till Apple perfects their products. Let’s face it, the iPad was a great new product, but its potential is what what makes it truly awesome. The first generation was really designed to be as simple as possible. Smart idea from apple of course, releasing a new product that everyone will buy regardless of the fact that Apple could have made it much better.
Either way. . .I’m hoping on some major upgrades for the second generation.
The second generation iPad is rumored to be released during the first Quarter of 2011 but I expect it to make an earlier appearance due to the holiday action.
So what’s new:
FaceTime - exciting for some, and boring for others. Either way, this now allow people from their iphones to contact people on their macs (since the recent update) or iPads.
New Glass – DigiTimes names a series of suppliers who expect Apple to release a “Ultra-thin” touch panel reinforced with glass. This suggest that Apple will be shaving off some thickness from their new device. It has done this to both the new iPhone and iPod Touch. Unfortunately, these devices, according to one study, are twice as breakable as their previous counterparts.
NO 7″ version -Those expecting the 7″ version should be disappointed because all testing has been done on only the 9.7″ screen size.
What’s interesting is the possible early release date. Will the new glass and camera equipped body be enough to grab users who just recently purchased their iPad?

I wrote an article about this a while back, and a similar rumor of a 7 inch iPad seems to have made its way back into the blogosphere.
Currently, the iPad has a 9.7 inch diagonal lcd screen.
Apparently, Apple believes a 7 inch iPad has a good market as well.
Digitimes, iLounge, AppleRummors, and IDG news all share reports that this 7 inch iPad is in the works for this coming Christmas.
The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and color on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation, the report says.
keep you updated

Apple’s recent iOS 4.0.2 release had two, main purposes.
1. Close up some PDF exploites
2. Disable Jailbreakme.com from working
Of course, I am most concerned with the latter but the former also poses some problems.
The problem, apple’s release only helps out the newer devices and leaves the older models out in the sun. Fortunately, the dev team is very considerate and has released a patch that removes the exploit for all users.
The fix is installable via Cydia itself now (search for “PDF Patch”). To test that it’s working properly, visit jailbreakme.com again. After you slide to jailbreak, you should no longer see a dialog box pop up (you’ll just see the star background). That means you’re no longer vulnerable!
We love you dev team!
So, do this:
DO NOT INSTALL iOS 4.0.2 -> unless, of course, you want to lose your jailbreakme
INSTALL the PDF Patch in Cydia
Rejoice!
