Antenna Problem with iPhone 4

Author : rooster

As most of you have probably already heard on some blog or another, the new iPhone, 600,000 of which were sold in one day, has had some issues with its “genius antenna”. The antenna surround the entire iPhone and is located in the metallic bezel.

Unfortunately, a disconcerting amount of users have been complaining that holding the device in their left hand, accounts for a loss of signal. The effect is almost immediately apparent and can quickly be fixed by merely not holding the device in your left hand.

But this is no real fix and Apple will supposedly release iPhone iOS 4.01 tomorrow to fix that bug. Steve Jobs is reported to have declared the problem a “non-issue”. . . oh steve.

PwnageTool 4.01

Author : rooster

Today, the Dev-team released PwnageTool 4.01 for the iOS 4.0. As of right now, certain devices’ restrictions have not yet been bypassed, but that will hopefully soon change!

What is not supported. . . yet!

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod Touch 3G

Supported Devices:

  • iPhone 3Gs

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
  • If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.01
  • iPhone 3G

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
  • If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.
  • If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
  • As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

*Remember: whenever entering DFU mode, use PwnageTool

  • iPod Touch 2G
  • If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
  • As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

iPhone 4.0 – twice the RAM the of the iPad

Author : rooster

It has just been confirmed that the new iPhone 4 does indeed have twice the RAM that both the iPhone 3Gs and the iPad have been equipped with. It has 512MB of RAM, for a phone . . . that is a lot.

The iPhone 3G contains 128MBs and was then, for the iPhone 3Gs model, pumped up to 256MB. What really confounds me is why the iPad was allotted this same 256MB and not 512 like the iPhone 4.

This leaves me with one real conclusion: the next iPad will be stocked. I’m hoping on two cameras, 512MB of RAM, and basically all the same features the iPhone 4 has currently (those same features that should have been debuted in the iPad.  . .but apple knows how to market its releases well).

The 512 was confirmed during the WWDC and will help the iPhone 4 with its ability to run a skimmed down version of iMovie.

“The iPhone 4, the biggest revolution since . . . the iPhone”

Author : rooster

Well, I’ll admit: it definitely is Steve, it definitely is.

Personally, I cannot believe how much Apple put into the iPhone 4.  Apple has a reputation  for not bringing all the advances to the table the first time around, I guess the fourth time does it. They really out did themselves: 2 cameras, 720p video resolution, a4 processor, a sleek and sexy device. . dang:

design

  • Aluminosilicate glass that claims to be 20-30 times stronger than plastic
  • 34% thinner
  • 3 grams heavier, weighs 137 grams
  • “thinnest smartphone ever”
  • Split volume buttons
  • stainless steel rim – acts as atenna for 3G and WiFi
  • 4.5 x 2.31 inches and .37 inches thick

The hardware

  • A4 Chip processor – just like the iPad
  • Power VR SGX 535 graphics card
  • subcomponents automatically switch off when not used
  • battery is 16% larger
  • 40% more talk time
  • Apple states
    • Talk over 3G: 7 hours.
    • Browsing over 3G: 6 hours.
    • Browsing over Wi-Fi: 10 hours.
    • Video: 10 hours.
    • Music: 40 hours.
    • Stand-by: 300 hours.
  • 3.5 inch display – same as before
  • 960 x 640 pixels retina display – four times as many as in the previous iPhone
  • 326 ppi
  • oleophobic layer – easier to clean
  • bigger sensor for the main camera, bigger lens as well
  • back light that can be used for flash as well as videoing
  • standard VGA conference camera – face time
  • built in 3-axis gyroscope and accelerometer – so 6-axis motion sensing
  • micro-SIM standard
  • additional microphone on the top used for noise cancelation

The software

  • iOS 4
  • multi-tasking
  • Retina display will re-scale all apps to looker sharper and less pixelated
  • facetime available over 3g
  • iMovie with 1,500 new features
  • 720p high definition video recording
  • ibooks

Price & Availability

  • available in black or white starting June 24
  • $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB IF you are a new user or are elibible for an upgrade
  • early upgrade $399 and $499
  • without contract (haha) $599 and $699

World Wide Developer’s Conference 2010

Author : rooster

Well, it’s that time of the year, WWDC time! Steve Jobs will undoubtedly have his famous keynote address and will wow the crowds with new products and fantastical promises. While almost all of the attention has been focused on the leaked iPhone, Jobs will likely be talking about more than a new iPhone at the event.  The following lists catalogs some of the other possible releases we will be seeing:

  • iPhone OS 4

This one is easy, Steve will be speaking about the new Phone OS for quite a while.

  • Mac Pro / 27″ Display

The Mac Pro line has not had an update in quite a while and Apple will most likely release a new, stronger and more powerful version at the event.

A report mentioned updating the Mac Pro display to 27″ as well. Mac Pro displays have been historically more packed but I guess we’ll see.

  • Cloud-Based iTunes / MobileMe

Not very likely in my opinion. Some have mentioned a possible wireless syncing for the iphone but I don’t think Apple will release that quite yet.Another rumor tauted that Apple will be giving away free MobileMe accounts to advertise for this cloud. . . Apple. . . free . . . I think not.

  • Apple TV

With Google announcing its Google TV, Apple may be dedicating more time and energy towards this field in the future, but I don’t think they are quite ready to role out a revolutionary device yet; maybe an update though.

If so, the new device is said to be based directly on iPhone OS 4.

  • Mac OS X 10.7

The next major release of Mac OS X has been in use since at least October 2009. Web records for MacRumors show that Apple has been using 10.7 internally since that time. Recent reports have gone against this possibility.

Steve Jobs said we wouldn’t be bored, so lets see it (tomorrow)!
