Tauw reports that significant progress has been made by the iPhone/Touch Dev team working on jailbreak software. It is definitely not ready for release but will be in the near future. This is great news and gives hope to iPod Touch owners who are hoping that along with the new iPhone jailbreak there will also be a iPod Touch jailbreak software update. If anyone has any information on whether this new jailbreak software works for the iPod Touch let me know in the comments and I will add it to the post. It looks like they have 3rd party applications running in some form but not to the point of the last jailbreak software released. They did most applications would need to be recompiled in new framework for them to work properly.

Update: Niacin has recently written a blog post saying they have closed in on hacking the iPhone and iPod Touch:

Using the tiff exploit, we have managed to expose the root parition via the symlink hack. We have verified the exploit with an iphone 1.0.2,1.1.1 and itouch 1.1.1
We are currently working on remounting the / parition rw and we will be hosting the exploit on this site SOON.

At macforums there is  a thread started by davidjearly where he has a screen capture of an email exchange between himself and “Steve Jobs”. We don’t know if this really is Steve Jobs or someone in the Apple department (or may in fact be a fake email). But it has been making the rounds on popular tech news sites and if this is real the add/edit calendar feature would be added in an upcoming software update for the iPod Touch. I don’t really use this feature but I know many do and are waiting for it to be added either by Apple or  a 3rd party program once the iPod Touch has been jailbreak’d.

An article at Cnn Money talks about the possibility of Apple opening up the iPhone (and iPod Touch) for third party applications. They would open them up with the release of their new OSx Leopard in 3 weeks. It mentions how major publishers have been rumored to be working on software for the iPod OS including EA. What do you think… Will Apple finally allow native third party applications?

There have been rumblings in the forums and comments about people mentioning errors and bugs on their iPod Touch. Do you have anything to report? Any error is helpful because it may just be that the iPod Touch is vulnerable at that point and hackers can focus on that area.

Life Hacker has released a video with instructions on how to use the iPod Touch to manage appointments and assignments. The feature is already in the iPhone and will hopefully be added once the iPod Touch has been jailbreak’d but for now this work around should do the trick.
