iPod Touch News Round-up and Initial Thoughts

Author : kdollar

Well, it’s been a couple days since Apple announced the iPod Touch. Here is a round-up of some important stories and articles that have covered the iPod Touch…Let me know in the comments if I missed any stories and I will add them to the post.

Engadget- Here are the first impressions from Engadget after they had a hands-on experience with the iPod after the keynote.

Gizmodo - This is a post talking about how third party video gear will probably not work with the iPod Touch (Or any of the new ipods for that matter.)

Apple’s iPod Touch Guided Tour - This video is a tutorial made by Apple to show how to use the iPod Touch…(for newbs)

CNNMoney - This article is from Business 2.0 magazine and has a bit more about the financial aspects of the recent iPod releases and iPhone price cuts.

Steve Jobs is Sick of the Cell Phone Industry - This is an article by Crunch Gear that mentions why Apple released the iPod Touch possibly to get back at the locked in cell phone industry.

iPod Touch Bluetooth?

Author : kdollar

There has been rumbling recently on whether the iPod Touch has bluetooth? Engadget reported that at the online Apple store they have a picture of the iPod Touch with a bluetooth icon on the top right corner of the screen. This was great news for all potential iPod Touch owners because with this it would potentially allow for AVRCP and stereo A2DP.

The celebrations were short lived because Engadget updated the post saying that Apple did not include bluetooth in the iPod Touch. Another update, later in the day, mentioned that the iPod Touch and the iPhone internals are very similar. People are now discussing if bluetooth is actually in the iPod Touch but apple will leave it inactivate. If this is the case then later down the road Apple could decide to add the feature in a software update….Or people can hack the iPod Touch and activate it themselves… :)

The wait will end soon after the iPod Touch is released. You can rest assured that someone will open up their iPod Touch in no time and the iPod Touch community will have hi-res shots of the internals.

iPod Touch Hacks Forums

Author : kdollar

I just installed an iPod touch hacks forum for this website to allow site visitors to discuss this exciting new product. Right now there is just one general forum. I have a feeling we will need more later but for now I think one should be sufficient. If you have any suggestions for different categories or additional forums, let me know in the comments and I will add them as I see fit. Let the discussions begin!

iPod Touch Can Run iPhone and 3rd Party Apps

Author : kdollar

Gizmodo has just received word that the iPod Touch and the iPhone run the exact same binaries and will be able to run the same applications (This was from an unofficial tipster inside Apple).

This is great news and means that the iPhone apps will almost immediately be on the iPod Touch…(if this is correct). I don’t think apple will officially release the apps so it looks like you will need to install them using the same method as the iPhone Tutorial. The apps that are missing from the iPod Touch are Mail, Google Maps, Stock and Weather.

What hack or application do you want for the iPod Touch?

Author : kdollar

The iPod Touch has not been released so its unlikely there are hacks being developed at this point but many people are already brainstorming hacks and applications that would enhance the iPod Touch experience. Let us know in the comments area if you have any suggestions or requests for hacks/applications. We will then make a list of all the requests to allow potential developers to check what ideas our community has come up with. Who knows, you may have your idea developed first…assuming that the iPod Touch will be hacked to allow third party applications to be installed (We all know that this will only be a matter of time).

Update: Here is the page with the running list of iPod Touch Hacks Requests.

Apple has just announced their new iPod which will soon join the iPod family. It is called the iPod Touch and will include many of the features that were introduced for the iPhone. It is a bit slimmer then the iphone with the same form factor. It includes coverflow, wifi, safari (for web browsing) and the ability to buy songs from iTunes using Wifi, a new feature that was also announced today for the iPhone .

This site will cover the iPod Touch and the hacking scene that is bound to happen. Like all new hot tech items, people will find ways to install applications and hack your iPod. You will then be able to get more out of your iPod then even Apple thought was possible.
