It looks like it may be a couple days before we will be installing 3rd party apps on the iPod Touch. I have read numerous reports that the iPhone jailbreak software does not work for the iPod Touch. I am sure the programmers for the programs will come out with iPod Touch specific jailbreak software. But till then…Enjoy the music (and video)….and come back here soon and hopefully we will have good jail breaking news

Gizmodo has reported that it looks like the iPod Touch screen is not identical to the iPhone. When playing the same video on both devices it looks like the iPod Touch screen has washed out black colors. At first people thought it may be just their model but it looks like it has been tested multiple times and the tests all have the same result: iPhone’s screen is superior. They are saying that the screen is not by any means bad but not up to the superior quality of the iPhone. Is this a deal breaker for you?
Update: Various posts by our members and around the internet have mentioned that this may not be a problem and it maybe only be a few defective models that have this problem.
Also check out the Gizmodo review of the iPhone.
David Films bought his iPod Touch and when he opened it it was set on the diagnostic screen. He is currently selling his iPod Touch on ebay because he said he has no use for it. One thing we have learned from looking at the diagnostic screen is that it looks like it has bluetooth disabled but just having it there gives us hope that Apple did not take it out and eventually we can figure out how to enable it. We won’t know for sure until someone opens up their iPod Touch…
So who wants to open up their device and photograph the internals? If you want to be a hero at iPod Touch Hacks…Send pics to webmaster (at) ipodtouchhacks.com…We can reward you with a link and/or a $25 gift card…(They need to be original images that you have taken and need to be exclusive to our site to get the small reward)
Guest Posted by Gregintosh: (Prepare for extremely nerdish rant) I am ready! And every person reading this knows what I am talking about, you are on a site devoted exclusively to cracking open a certain device. As I take a moment and reflect on the historic announcement of the iPod Touch and subsequent chatter of its release into the wild, a few little goosebumps appear on my arm…this is exciting! My wife has even said I can get one (she works and has been brainwashed at Starbucks, so as soon as I revealed that feature she went into a mystical trance and immediately said yes. Wonder if I could sue them for that?)!
Anyways, onto the open letter. Hackers, I adore you. If you set up a PayPal account on your site, and the hack does what it is supposed to do, then some $$$$$$ (well, maybe just $$) will be coming your way. But there is a stipulation, give me what the rest of less-talented n00bs want. Here are our demands, sort of a reverse ransom:
Google Maps
Mail (would Thunderbird be possible?)
iCal, give its balls back or give us something else
Remote Desktop
iChat or some kind of client
OpenOffice? (tough, but i’ll pay you for it)
I know, we have banged around what we want hacked and put on this thing, but remember, o’ hacker, your hard work will be rewarded!
It has been reported that the iPod Touch has been released at some of the Apple retail locations! Justin, one of our readers, has left a comment saying that he has picked up his iPod Touch. We will soon have a list of stores and states that have the iPod Touch for sale. If your local apple store has them available please leave a comment on where you are located. Also if they had the 16gb and/or 8gb.
Apple Store Locations
Some Apple stores that are around me that I have called….Updated: July 14 @ 2:30
Valley Fair - Some Available
Palo Alto -8gb left
Oak Ridge - Sold Out
Let the hacking begin… if you can find it…
PCmag has just published the first iPod Touch review. With a perfect 5/5, they are quick to say that “This is probably the best portable media player ever made.” They also mention a button function that is new to the iPod Touch. When you double click the button on the bottom of the iPod Touch (the only real button) you will be taken to the iPod music controls.
The iPod still does not allow you to change the EQ setting but what else is new…they have yet to add this feature but we may be able to add it ourselves, so I wouldn’t think of this as a negative. Well I can’t say this review sold me on the device because I was going to buy one anyway. But it is nice to hear a confirmation that the iPod Touch is the real deal.
CNNMoney has a story that Apple will be releasing 30-day movie rentals for $2.99 in the fall. You will be able to watch the movies on your TV(Apple TV), computer and iPods. They are currently in talks with all the major Hollywood studios to ink a deal. Then the question becomes how long will it take before people figure out how to stop the 30 day limit?
I know this is an Touch iPod hacks site but I figured a story about the iPhone is still worthwhile. Engadget is reporting that the iPhone Dev Wiki team may have found a way to unlock the iPhone. It has already been proven that the iPhoneSIMfree method works but it is not free and prices range from $50-$100 dollars. The iPhone Dev Wiki team are working to break it themselves using some of the techniques the iPhoneSIMfree team used to make their software hack. If they were to break it…which sounds very promising…it will be a free iPhone unlocking option.
Update: Well that was fast…here is instructions on how to unlock your iPhone, free…anyone know any good data plans for a GSM carrier?
Engadget has just reported that you will not be able to add calendar appointments to your iPod Touch. Sites have been reporting that this may be the case but Engadget has just confirmed this rumor by talking to a contact inside Apple. The iPod Touch will only be able to view appointments made on the computer and will not allow you to create them. This is interesting because they have this feature for the iPhone and have taken it out of the iPod Touch.
This will eventually be solved by the iPod Touch hacking community taking the application from the iPhone and installing it on the iPod Touch. I guess Apple is pushing for people to buy the iPhone rather then the iPod Touch by disabling small features?
As iPod Touch Hacks continues to grow, I think it would be beneficial to have more contributors to the site. If you are interested in writing news stories or articles for the site, then send an email to: webmaster (at) ipodtouchhacks.com with any experience or why you would be a good poster. Don’t feel like you need to be technical to be a news poster but it is a plus. Also, if you have a good article or news post that we should write about, let me know.
